From a previous answer I gave...

Back in 1982 I decided to stop smoking...I didn't have very much money and I made the commitment that if I stopped smoking, the money I would save would enable me to sponsor a child through Action Aid, and that would be an incentive to really stop smoking because I couldn't afford to do both....as I said, that was back in 1982...April to be exact, I have never smoked since and continue to sponsor to this day although my sponsorship now goes towards a community in Nepal rather than an individual child.

I have sponsored for a long time now. I currently sponsor two children from Bronx, New York under a ministry called Metro Ministries. You send $23.00 a month (per child) and you get to correspond, send gifts, and you can even visit if you want. It is really a great ministry. It is called Won-by-One. I've even sent my kids to camp and provided bookbags for school. They write you back too. Check out their website. I also sponsor a child with World Vision.
