but the big bang was merely an event in time how`d you know that time didn`t exist before that?
maybe time will only exist as long as man is around to claim that it exists

It had a start, that's for (nearly) sure. Although, it might have no end. We shall see.

before i answer the question i must say 2 things!
Firstly time will end and secondly this is not aquestion concerned with environment!
Time started with big bang.

We know time had a start, at the big bang, because we can measure it (indirectly).
We cannot measure its end, or tell if it has one at present.
