I used to self harm and have several scars at the top of my right thigh which do not reach below girl boxers or small shorts, so are easily hidden, but i do not know what the army health test consists of-will anybody see these? I dont do it any more and am perfectly mentally stable and determined to follow my dream of joining the army! Will my past be a problem and do i need to strip down to my undies at any point during the application process? Any advice or info you have will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

lol...its not a beauty contest as long as its covered later on by your BDU's.....just don't jump into anything till you now the long haul of it. A recruiter will tell you what you want to hear......so go in with a little knowledge first off..

The only time that you are undressed that far is during your initial entry physical that you have to go through, but they may not even do that anymore. The scars would not be visible during army physical fitness, if you are self conscience of them the army will allow you to wear a pair of spandex shorts under your PT shorts that will cover everything to just above your knees. So no your scars should not be an issue. They will ask about any previous conditions, to include mental that you have, or do suffer from. Then you just have to be honest. They will not deduct anything from you for being honest about a previous condition. But "IF" they do ask you if you were cleared at all by a doctor you should be able to produce evidence of that.

No, the scars alone will not stop you from joining the military.

You will have to explain during the physical, the important part is was it ever documented by a doctor. If so you need to bring copies of the documentation, saying your not crazy. If not just say it was a hobby, skin art, you know.

You will be given a psych test along with other testing. The military doesn't want a headcase running around with loaded weapons. They will want your medical history too.
