For a soft boiled egg, I put the egg in cold water then start timing when the water is boiling for 3.5 minutes. I tend to use larger eggs if possible.

could you define 'perfect' in your opinion?

depends how you like your eggs, you can boil it:

soft boiled 4 min - the white is not too hard and the yolk is runny to dip your toast in it

medium soft 5 1/2 or 6 min the white is hard the yolk is soft

hard boiled over 6 min to 7-8 min for a good hard yolk, but if you do over 10 min the yolk might turn greenish on the outside and very dry.

Place eggs in a pot of cold water, with enough water to cover them by about 1/2 inch. Place on burner, bring to the boil, boil for one minute. Remove from heat, cover with a tightly fitting lid, and let them sit (UNDISTURBED) for 15 minutes.

Your eggs will be perfectly hard cooked, bright yellow yolks, and easy to peel.

first you put the egg in (room temperature) water that covers the egg completely in a pot ,add a dash of salt and turn the stove top on and let egg come to a boil in the water. once its boiling, cover pot with lid that seals pot tightly and turn stove top off.Let the egg set in the pot covered for approx. 7-10 min. Then remove egg ,let it cool down, before trying to peel it. Also running cold water over it while your peeling the egg, helps a lot.

have water boiling already, gently lower egg in, boil for 3 / 4 mins and take out. crack shell to stop cooking if you want it hot then serve. if you want it cool then make sure you cool it down quickly under running water for ages, the grey around the yolk is caused from not being cooled down quick enough.

Put the egg into cold salted water, heat the water up and let it boil for seven minutes, plunge under cold running water for five minutes and then it should peel cleanly and have no black round the yolk.

Have a look at Lakeland Plastics. They have a website. And buy yourself a gadget that looks like an egg. You pop in in the pot and you can see the grading when it reaches the way you like it. I don't know what it is called, unfortunately. I used mine this morning and whenever I do, I;m really pleased I've got it.
It's the size of an egg, orange coloured with marks on it. Have a quick search through Lakeland.
