What does your age have to do with it,if its consentual/? Why do we let two 14 years old have sex?. I mean what would be wrong like if the 40 year old virgin (steve carell) had sex with a 16 year old?. Isnt true tho that if there is fluff on her muff than she is old enough?

Very often, there is no point. People like to enforce their own views on others regardless of their reasonability or validity.
Why is the legal age to vote 18? Some peple are able to make intelligent decisions before that. Most never are! lol. It's arbitrary.
Laws agains pedophila obviously make sense. But in some states, it's illegal for two 15-year olds to have sex WITH EACH OTHER. Both can be charged with a crime.
No, I'm not making that up.
The alleged 'point' is to prevent older, predatory men from taking advantage of young, impressionable teenage girls. There's a certain validity to that; in over half of teen pregnancies, the father is more than four years older than the mother.
All to often however, such statutes are abused by vindictive parents to keep a teenage couple apart. The outcome can be devastating, as these 'crimes' usually carry penalties upwards of 10 years in prison.

oh, and to the rocket scientist below that said "it is illegal, plain and simple"—nothing could be farther from the truth. each U.S. state has its own laws, usually multiple laws per state, and the statutes vary widely. the one thing it is not is "plain and simple"

In Denmark where i come from the age of legal sexual consent is 15. Legally adults at the age of 18. On average we have a lot less teenage pregnancies than the US
because of sex education in schools, counseling measures, and availability of contraceptives.
Education and Preservatives is the key to prevent it. I'm not bashing the US in any means but the country is severely suffering on this aspect because its purist and religious beliefs.
To the guy below. Legal sexual consent does not = Legal adult
necessarily as is the case in my country. To sign any legal contract you have to be 18+.
Its really only a moral type of question. Just because you find it disgusting to think about a 16 year old and a 40 year old (i have yet to see that in my lifetime) doesn't mean it should be illegal

You run into far too many issues if you start messing with those laws. If a girl is old enough at 16 to consent to sex, you are making them adults. Think of all the other contracts and things they could then enter into. It is illegal, plain and simple.

the age of consent laws are designed to protect children , who have neither the physical or emotional maturity for sexual realtionships and to prevent them being taken advantage of by predators, if you really think there is nothing wrong with a 40 year old and a 16 year old having sex, then you have a problem
