Back when the Hindu's used the caste system, I don't know if they still use it or not, they had 5 groups. The highest rank was Brahmin who were Priests and Teachers, then next in rank was Ksatriyas who were Warriors and Rulers, next was Vaisyas who were Farmers, Merchants, Artisans, etc, then Sudras who were Laborers. There was fifth group called the Untouchables. Who exactly were they besides outcastes?

I did some research on each of the 4 normal groups and found that each group is actually an element. But I had to put 2 and 2 together to figure that out. Apparently in order to be a Brahmin, you would have to be born under the sign of Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces. That would make Brahmin equal to the element water.
So here is what I got:
Brahmin: Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
Ksatriya: Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
Vaisya: Earth: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo.
Sudra: Air: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

there was never a fifth group..

Sudras are from earth element

Untouchables were those sudra who did butchering of animals, removing skins of dead animals etc

Caste system as you see now is misinterpretation of real system
As hinduism never attach caste with birth

Manu Smiriti which tells abt caste system only tells there are four type of people in society - preachers (Brahmins), warriors (Kshtria), , buisnessmen (vaishy) and sudra (labor)

This division of human being is in all countries....

Caste became a social evil...when people left the original idea and connected caste with birth

Hinduism is soooooo old...and such misunderstandings are obvious

Vedas, upanishdas, and Gita the main scriptures of hinduism... do not mention anything about caste... hence it is not really a religious, but social problem

Actually in the Sanatana Dharma, based on the eternal Vedas,
it is callled as Varnashrama Dharma consisiting of four social order, viz., Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras and the four spiritual orders, viz., Brahmachary, Grihastha, Vanaprastha and Sannyasa is very natural in all the society.
We find an intelligent class of men(Brahmanas),military people(Kshatriyas), commercial men(Vaishyas) and manual laborers(Shudras). In every country we see these above four kinds of people are present which is natural.

But at the present time the above system(Varnashrama system) which was scientifically based on the quality and work of a person as per the Vedas(veda means knowledge) has become spoiled as caste system in modern times based on one's birth.

For example, if a son of a judge or doctor becomes a judge or doctor judge based only on his being the son of a judge or doctor is not right. But anybody can be a judge or doctor based on his acquiring the quality of the judge or doctor.

Lord Sri Krishna says in Bhagavad gita, chapter 4,text 13,
According to the three modes of material nature and the work associated with them, the four divisions of human society are created by Me. And although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the nondoer, being unchangeable.

A book "Civilization and Transcendence" by
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON.

Those who don't follow the above scietific process, automatically put themselves under the 5th group.
