Fundies follow dogma without question...they are sheep. They cannot use common sense or personal judgment, they are slaves to their dogma and whatever dim witted leader is spewing this poison. Even if you banish religion, you can never banish ignorance...and that is the basis of all fundamentalism.

Apparently history is being changed or there are a lot of people here who never studied it. It appears they are so intent on removing religion they don't bother to get the facts straight. Those who have done the most damage and killing are not doing it for religious reason. The genocides in Africa are tribal and unrelated to religion. The mass murders in Cambodia had nothing to do with religion. Insanity comes in many forms and it isn't just the extremists in religion who are doing damage.
Nor are all the wars from religious stand points. You constantly cite the Christians and crusades but never cite the Romans, the Greeks under Alexander, the princes in India, the Nazis, the fascists in Italy, the French kings.... The list of atrocities committed for the sake of land, power and material gain far exceed the people you condemn and wish to remove. Actually, all who condemn religion are a step closer to the fanatics than they seem to realize.

Almost every war in human history has been caused, in one way or another, by religion. Religion will never be abolished. In the end, it will be some religious wacko that pushes the button and starts a nuclear war. Or some religious wacko that releases a deadly disease on this planet that kills most of its inhabitants.
It is because they are the people who are most willing to die for what they believe. Even if that means taking others with them, no matter what their doctrine teaches about love and turning the other cheek. Religion is dangerous.
PS. Imam, do you have any concept of world history? Every war you mention had religion involved in it. Thanks for the effort though. Have a nice day!

Good point! Although you answered your own question. Being a fanatic of anything and everything is dangerous. It makes you blind to common decency and the milk of human kindness (or vice versa). I would have agreed to banishing religion if life would make sense otherwise to like 90% of world population. Or law and order. Not only that, some religions are actually good; make life easier and actually bearable. People just don't know how to handle them coz people are greedy and imperfect. Which is why a wise man once said "do not judge a philosophy by it's abuse".

The most dangerous people in society are people that have an sick obsession of any kind, if they do not have religion they will obsess over something else. The religion does not create wackos, to get rid of them you need to find the source not one of the excuses that some of them use.

We must protect ourselves from extremists, but not at the cost of ourselves. If we band or destroyed religions, they will just go underground as they did in the USSR. For as long as they express the beliefs and wishes of a number of people, how ever misguided, they serve a good purpose.
What we need to encourage is for the moderates within the religion to be in control. This is not done by making them weak within their organizations

It depends on how one is educated and influenced, defining religion...
Many people claim to be free thinkers because they do not want to choose a religion. They simply refuse to have an opinion about such important matters as their existence and are even proud of it. This is not a very healthy state of affairs. Of course, each person is at liberty to choose his own religion according to his convictions.
To do this, he must find time to study and investigate. Nevertheless he should not condemn any particular religion just because he cannot understand or agree with it. Neither should he remain forever without a religion. He should find out a suitable religion for himself since there are existing rational and practicable religions in this world, accepted by intelligent people. A man without a religion is likened to an isolated small boat in a stormy sea.
An explanation of the purpose of life and salvation depends on religion. By practicing a rational religion one can train oneself to live as a cultured person and finally be able to achieve the aim of life. His wealth, academic knowledge, name, power and other embellishments cannot give him his peace of mind and happiness. A person without a religion will feel that something is lacking in him more particularly during the latter part of his life. Religion is the only friend, which can give him satisfaction and consolation up to his last moment.
If all those so-called free thinkers do really think freely, they must maintain that attitude in all other aspects of their lives. Why do they want to represent themselves as free thinkers only with respect to religion?
Some people feel that if they can live as cultured people without following any religion, there is no necessity for them to possess a religion. Such people should remember that it was religion that taught mankind to live as cultured people. However religion does not mean mere religious labels but religious principles. There is no righteous way of life which religion has not influenced. Therefore man must not forget religion. Religion alone can turn the tide of selfish materialism and guide man towards the goal of selfless dedication and service to mankind. The benefits of religious instruction belong to the inner spirit of the human personality.
Religion and culture cannot be separated. When religious practices and beliefs penetrate the minds of the people for centuries they forget the religion but continue to practice these codes of behavior as part of their culture.

Hitler, Stalin, Ghengis Khan, Mao, all were mass murderers, None of them were religious fundamentalists. The list could be longer but I think you get the point.
Peace and Blessings,
Imam Salim
PS as far as religion being the cause of war, I think you better read your history books again. All wars are started for economic opportunity. You can't really believe that WW I and WW II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Roman Empire Expansion, Colonization of the New World, and on and on were started for religious reasons do you?

It's not directly linked to religion. It's probably the other way around : "wackos" tend to also become religious fundies...
If they suffer from schizoid delusional mental disease, they tend to embrace religions or any other form of irrational beliefs and superstitions.
