Ok I have sleeplessness..massive anxiety and panic attacks. Went to my physician today and they gave me a trycilic anti-depressant known as Vistaril (which i've taken before and doesn't work.) She then told me to go to the Mental Health place tomorrow because they could diagnose me on better meds. She mentioned they know alot about prozac, zoloft and things. That isn't what I need..I need Xanax because I'm so totaly not depressed I'm just always so nervous. My nervousness prevents me from dating..hangin with friends and just having a normal life. I've taken Xanax before recreationally and it mellows me out and allows me to socialize. So my question is when I visit the Mental place tomorrow and tell them that my Doc told me to come here should I say that she said I should come and discuss alprazolam(xanax) with them? Would that better my chances of getting it? And would they know that she didn't say that?
It's not that I want it because I'm a druggie..I just know its what will help!

-=To Snout=- No one has medically advised me against xanax. The meds that they have prescribed me which are the "best" don't work for me..I've tried em. So I understand you're trying to help but your totaly misinformed on the topic.

Either doctor could prescribe it for you. It will ot necessarily help to say that your doctor recommended it for you because many doctors feel it necessary to make up their own minds. Just let them know how seriously debilitating this anxiety is for you and that the vistaril doesn't work for you. It might help to anxiously tap your foot on the floor or another anxious gesture.
good luck...

Any physician or physician's assistant is able to prescribe Xanax. However, a mental health expert does have more experience with these type of drugs. I would think you would have a better chance of getting Xanax from a mental health professional IF he or she believes that is the best medication for you. There are other medications that can do the same thing. Give whatever is suggested a try, but do make the point that the antidepressant you were given has been tried and it does not work.

Serious advice here:

If you are convinced that Xanax is the answer for you, despite medical advice, you are well on the way to becoming the druggie that you deny you are and which I believe you don't want to become.

The medications your doctor has suggested are the best medications available for anxiety disorders. They are not just for depression. It is unlikely that mental health specialists will magically find better drugs, however they may have some skill in choosing which of the options will best suit you. Hopefully they will also connect you with some non pharmacological psychological treatments. If they don't, then ask them.

Alprazolam is not the answer to your problem. Be honest with your health professionals. If you start trying to manipulate them to get a particular drug you are, by definition, a druggie. Don't do that. It will end in tears.

Alprazolam is the generic of xanax. They are the same, except Alprazolam is less expensive. I would suggest you do not get high on them, they are very addictive meds. My brother abuses them and drinks with them, now he is in a pitiful shape. This is bad bad business. PLease take my advise.

Yes you can suggest a med to your Dr. Klonopin and Ativan are also in the same catagory just so you know and both are excellent anti-anxiety meds. Your regular Dr may also prescribe it as well. If you let ur Dr know you took it "recreationally", they won't prescribe it for you. Say you heard about it. And if you get it, DON'T abuse it!

I kno it helps too...I used to take it with no problems or addiction. No one will prescribe it to me anymore because of my recent history of drug use.

No. General practitioners also prescribe it.
