If this is for personal use then I'd suggest getting a handheld one from eBay.

If it's for a comercial setting then I would recommend finding a shop fitter who should be able to supply it. (Check your local yellow pages for listings). The benefit of donig this is that you can opt for a support contract to fix it if it were to fail.

In both cases, the output from the device is likely to be that of a keyboard, in that the numbers are "typed". If this is the case then it will probably come with a cable, and therefore no special drivers would be needed.

After using a few differentt brands for projects, I tend to use the Metrologic scanners with the intelligent stand.
They have models for the standard barcodes, but also the 2d type as well. Some of them come with a high-definition resolution.

As for Denver, a good local store should help, try this site to see if they have a local one:

You can also get some of their scanners from Amazon.com

Make sure you order the model that plugges into the USB port, it's the fareasiest to setup and use.

Staples or Office Depot. I would check the online site since most stores don't carry them in stock. (There's not a massive demand for them.) You can also try eBay or an Office Surplus store.
