Making water more expensive isnt going to stop people from wasting the limited amount that we have in this country.
Everyone needs to be educated on better ways to save water, and everoyne needs to do their part to save more water (im talking to you Mr. Neighbour who gets up in the middle of the night to water his lawn - we can hear you!)

Everyone here has made some great points. I'm sure we all know of someone who waters after dark. In fact, some are even hooking up their hose to their neighbours taps in the middle of the night.
Times are tough and it looks like there's a lot of debate, but it's all going to be too little too late. The situation should have been tackled years ago.
More expensive water may mean some people get the attitude I'm paying for it so I'll use what I like.
I'm not for more expensive water but someone has to pay for dams, pipelines or recycling and desalination plants.
I agree all homes including rentals should have tanks. Queensland has full rebates for rainwater tanks up to $1000. I don't know what other states are doing.

No we are the most urbanized country in the world and if we don't have enough water for the people in the cities now why do we keep building more suburbs. The people that waste the most water usually have nice lush lawns and swimming pools in their backyard so they are not going to care if they have to pay more but that doesn't conserve water for our future.West Aus has already has plans in place to make sure we have enough for our future citizens even being left out of Howards 10 million dollar plan so your not getting our water(like all our minerals) learn how to not to waste it.

What most state governments and water authorities are hiding is that domestic consumption is only a very small part of the total consumption. Domestic hose/sprinkler bans save bugga all. Some clown with a rice paddy in the middle of the driest part of Australia uses more than some small cities alone.
In Perth they build factory units and then surround them with grass. On come the sprinklers and they also pay bugga all for their water.
The c*ck heads are conning the general population about water usage. True if they charge the growers more it will have a knock on effect to the consumer, but we have to look at what we are growing! Its stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think we're going to be given the choice.
Successive Governments have ignored the problem and now someone has to pay for the infrastructure to be put into place.
Looks like we will have the job of paying for it.
Near sighted politicians have only ever looked as far as the next election.
Water has always been put into the "too hard basket", in good times it wasn't a vote winner.
Gee Fly you've really got a hot topic here.
It will be interesting to see all the answers you get.
Thanks.

no, the govt really need to do more stuff to make people want to save water. increasing the cost is just going to make people annoyed and probably have less respect for water restrictions. one thing is they should make rainwater tanks more freely available, eg. FREE! and not just for houseowners but renters as well.

clarify that Australia has an prolonged proud history of socialism and government subsidies, to extend the fee of water is to call into question the finished beginning of our society, even in usa, the land of the unfastened, the homestead of unfastened industry capitalism, their finished society is ruled by ability of government policies and subsidies, capitalism has failed, the fee of goods ought to now no longer be ruled by ability of the simplistic regulation of supply and demand. playstation . what I wrote is quite sarcastic, as i could actual choose for to work out the pro area win, yet I did my desirable. Viva Capitalism!

we are running out, if they introduce other ways to get water, eg recycling, desalination etc then this is more expensive and water will have to go up.
