There are linguists who have begun to collaborate their studies with anthropologists so they can corellate the pattern of language development and the spread of certain types of food and tools. They are fairly certain they have narrowed the field down to four "Mother tongues". One Asian, one African, one European and one that would be Native to the Americas.
That would make sense if one were to take the tower of Babel seriously. There are four skin colors, Asians, although quite tan are called the "yellow" race. African peoples are Black or very dark brown. Europeans are a pale white, and the Native Americans are called Red.
Four races, four skin tones. Four "mother languages".

Consider for a moment that God actually did confound the languages. If you believe in God you have to admit He is not a God of confusion. So, He gave a language to each of the skin colors so people could readily know who spoke their language. The people spread out from the tower each moving to an area where they could build their own society and over time, seperated by geography they began to devolop seperate dialects.

There is some physical evidence to support this assumption. But scientists are not convinced they have enough to positively state mankind originated in the mideast and spread out from there. They suspect it, they believe it, but they are not ready to say, absolutely.

Seems to me anyone who believes the bible already knows the answer.

The claim is neither substantiated nor refuted -- we simply don't know. But the tower of Babel story is fiction. Languages evolve in much the same way that species do. The matter is discussed at some length in:

The story is a "just-so" tale. A made-up tale to try to explain why there are so many different cultures and languages. Like the stories about "how the pig got a curly tail" or "how the Giraffe got a long neck".

Well it maybe true. I heard that ever one started out speaking one language, and the Gods decided to play a joke on mankind and gave them diffrent languages to speak to confuse the hell out of them. Seems to be working....

I think it is a joke. Language was developed in many different places. If it was developed in only one place, WE WOULD ONLY HAVE ONE LANGUAGE!!!!!
