I started running regularly because I enjoyed it. Eventually, I began training to run a marathon, which meant that I ran almost every day and for a long time. After a while, people I know started commenting to me that they see me "all the time". Then, I started noticing them too. When you're tired, it's nice to wave at a friend walking by. It gives me a nice energy boost.
For me, I look for just about anything to motivate me to run those miles, like adding energetic songs to my ipod or trying to beat my personal best time or distance. While I don't go out of my way to schedule my runs to maximize seeing other people, I can't blame anyone that does. Every little bit of motivation helps!

I think only a small percentage would even bother to run just to be seen running. It requires strength, stamina and commitment to the program. Plus, a few miles into the run, NOBODY is looking good- red, sweaty and gritty from road dirt. I want to run, listen to music and not been seen by anyone except those also working out.

Personally, I go out of my way to stay AWAY from traffic and out of rush hour. I really don't like people watching me when I run-and they always do. It's not like I'm fat or anything, I'm very skinny, so they tend to stare, and it's uncomfortable for me.
Other people I know like to run at busy times because they know that if they get in trouble, like getting hurt, or mugged or something, there will be people around, hopefully people who will help them. And there's always the people who will go running because they've got pretty new work-out gear and want to show it off. I don't understand that, because you can tell when people are serious runners by their workout gear. Serious runners just want to either be warm or cool, depending on the weather-we'll look like idiots in old clothes and various mismatched items, but we know that we're doing a good job on our workout.

Perhaps. There's so much work required to make your muscles stretch and go beyond the normal comfort level that a little exhibitionism may be a reminder that to the runner it's worth the price.
Unfortunately as they age, I wonder how many are candidates for knee and hip replacements as opposed to those of us who just push ourselves away from the table, pop a diet pill and walk!

Why would anyone run just to be seen? That would be weird. I think people run at the places and times that they do because.. i don't know... maybe that's the only time of the day they can do it and that's the most convenient place to do it? I don't know.. who cares where and when people go running?

some do, definitely.
they are the ones with the brand new high-tech gear, the expensive new shoes and track suits, that run maybe one mile then go "wow, I really had a hard workout." and head for the coffee shop.
you see them occasionally. for them, its about showing off the new stuff getting seen.
thankfully, MOST runners are not like that.
