The demon Sankhacuda was killed by the Lord during His pastimes at Horika in the month of Phalguna, and the same ceremony is still observed in India by the burning of the effigy of Sankhacuda one day prior to the Lord's pastimes at Horika, generally known as Holi.

The mythological beliefs, you have seen above are prevelent in Hindu society.
Holi is a very important festival for Hindus.
I tell you the other story of this festival.
In fact India's economy was based on agriculture and people were mostly engaged in agriculture activities. [ still it is so, but at present industralisation has captured remarkably]
Now after the main 'RABI' crop season, harvesting starts and farmers enjoy the prodution of their crop. This is the only time of the year they feel very happy, hence they celebrate it in the form of HOLI.
The remains of the crop were/ are burnt to make the fields ready and clean for further crops.
As for colours, initiallly the flowers of 'TESU' were collected and boiled in water to produce yellow colour, which was thrown on each other.
Now since 'TESU' flowers are/ were not available in urban areas, unnatural colurs came into being. That's how colours started being used.
Now a days no body plays Holi with Tesu flowers.
Perhaps you might have noticed that every where in the world farmers celebrate after harvesting their crops in one form or the another.
