Does the American public view the members of the armed forces as heros? Or do they take for granted the freedom that they have?

I wouldn't go so far as to say "heroes". They all do a tough job that most others don't want to do, that's for sure. Among that group, I'm sure there are a few heroes, though.

I believe the term "heroes" is an overused term. Ask any Medal of Honor recipient... they won't call themselves heroes, just guys in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Do people take for granted the freedom that they have? Yes, some do. They all seem to congregate on the yahoo message boards writing inflammatory questions with poor grammar. I'm sure you've seen them! :)

Take care.

Yes and yes. Let's face, most of us take everything for granted, including each other. Freedom is difficult to maintain, sacrifice is great, but as long as we aren't the ones making the sacrifice, well, its all good.
Now, thats a cynical position, but its fairly accurate. Do all Americans say a prayer each day for the things our military men and women do for us? No. It would be far too difficult to think about that kind of sacrifice each day; to dwell on the misery and pain and sacrifice on a regular basis. For most individuals I think the most that can be expected is that they do, on some level, learn to appreciate their freedoms and in some way show their appreciation to any service members that they might know or have acquaintance with.
I don't think men and women join the military to become hero's, but in many, many ways they all are because they do what no one else can and they make the sacrifices that most of us are unable and unwilling to make. The same could be said of the families left at home.
God Bless America and God Bless all military service members!

Our freedoms have been systematically taken away from us because Bush believes the Constitution is "just another piece of paper"!

I don't view the armed forces as heroes, and neither does the general public! Have you been to a Memorial day parade? Bush doesn't think they are heroes as he is getting them killed for nothing, and has been taking away, cutting or eliminating benefits! He cut widows benefits in 1/2, he is on his 2ND cut of the VA Hospitals, the 1st 100 Billion in 2006, but he has the tax cuts for the rich in the budget!

We have had 32,000 wounded in Iraq and Bush is cutting hospitals and giving tax cuts to the rich. Can someone please explain that to me because I think there is something terribly broken in our government and the way they think!

I can tell you that when i got home from Vietnam I was considered no hero and at least we were fighting the Communist!

And how do you equate hero with freedom in Iraq? We aren't in Iraq for freedom! Freedom is not spelled OIL!

Our military, for the most part have sacrificed a lot and this country has never treated it's veterans with any respect! They do what they are asked to do and at much danger to themselves, though none in Iraq have ever taken on a division of the North Vietnamese Army!

What I think has happened to the troops is a crime, and I hope Bush has to pay for it!

They are heroes. I thank and appreciate the troops. Many people do take their freedoms for granted, but that is always the case.

I'm an Air Force and Air Force Reserve veteran with a total of 41 years combined service, including ten years active duty and a year-long tour in Vietnam. I experienced hostile fire, although I don't think I was ever in any real danger.

To me the troops who were and are now directly in the line of fire are absolute heroes. You don't have to have my military experience to appreciate them, but a person with my military experience would know better than many just how valuable and heroic the troops really are.

On many occasions heroes, often reluctant heroes, stood between people like me--who also did important work--and enemy fire, often at great personal cost.

I am thankful not only to these men and women, but also to their families. One of my stepsons has spent two tours in combat areas, and there is no question in my mind that he, and others like him, are heroic in every sense of the word.

I think most of the public "gets it." Sadly our lame news media usually doesn't.

I have more respect for our troops for all they have to go through and also everything they see while their over there. But also because I have family who are members of the armed forces and has been there.

I see allot of people that don't think high of them but little do they stop to think if it wasn't for our troops we wouldn't be able to live the life we live now.

I think our soldiers are hero's! It sickens me that people don't support them more. I don't see them doing anything about it. You never know....A LOT of them don't agree w/ the war that is going on but they are still over there risking their lives for all of our freedom! They're the ones leaving there family's at the drop of a dime b/c 'the duty calls'!

I would say the vast majority of sane people would see them as heroes as I do. They are willing to sacrifice their life and comfort for the sake of ours. They accept any goal put in front of them whether they believe in it's cause or not. There is no better definition of a hero in my book =)
