I tend to agree with "lyyman" and would like to expand on this. What irritates the stomach may also irritate the bowel. The bowel is the large intestine, the colon. During normal digestion, food remains in a liquid state due to secreted water by the stomcah, upper small intestine, pancreas and gallbladder. Food that isn't digested reaches the lower portion of the small intestine and the colon in a liquid form. Normally the lower small intestine and particularly the colon absorb this water. If the stomach or upper part of the small intestine secrete too much water or the lower small intestine and colon can't absorb enough water, or the liquid food passes through the small intestine and colon too quickly for them to absorb the water the stool is loose or runny.
Some bacteria, viruses, parasites and conditions, even certain foods for some people, cause an increased secretion of fluid either by inflammation or by stimulating excessive secretion of fluid and abnormally rapid peristalsis. This is called hyperperistalsis. Peristalsis is the rhythmic movement of the intestines that moves food through its length.
More than one of these conditons I've mentioned can occur at the same time. That is why stool can be loose with stomach upset.

Well its not always that that stool becomes loose when you have an upset tummy. Due to certain pathology the peristaltic movements of the gastrointestinal tract incerses and this increase in the peristaltic movements more over due to certain infection the absorption of water in the intestines also decreses and water is accompanied with the stool making it in such a constituentcy. Often the peristaltic movements are increased causing the movement of the bolus the body is trying to void. The function of the large intestine to reabsorb liquid which it can't do when conditions force the content through it rapidly.

If you have a bug the body pushes water into your gastro intestinal tract to try to flush out the toxins. It's important to keep your water intake up in order to avoid dehydration.
One home cure is to eat biotic yogurt or buy bacteria pills at your health food store. The bacteria from biotic yogurt attacks the bad bacteria in your system.
