If whatever religion achieved their goal of converting the whole world does this not give the head of that religion too much power - thinking along the lines of power absolute corrupts absolutely.

There's NO what if about it. It is prophecized and will come about. Read Revelation. The antichrist will be the leader of the political system and the false prophet will be the leader of the ONE World Religion. Most people at this time, during the tribulation will follow this one world corrupt religion that will worship the antichrist. I believe christians will be in heaven, raptured by Jesus before this happens. Revelation can answer your What then question!

If it were CHRISTIANITY....there would be less, much less abuse of power. The people would hold that power accountable by the WORD OF GOD. (If all people were Christians; real ones, not JW, not Mormons, not any sect or cult).
The WORLDPOWER figure will be achieved. But it is more political and powerful....than religious. It is the New World Order, the One WORLD under the antiChrist. It will follow a 7 year peace treaty between the Jewish State and the Palestinians. The antichrist will break the treaty half way thru, and HELL WILL ENSUE upon the earth.
Choose ye this day WHOM ye will serve!
Every knee WILL bow down, and Every tongue WILL confess..that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

That one religion would soon be splintered into myriad sects, each claiming to be the true interpreter of that one religion. I do believe, though, that before that happened, Lord Acton's maxim would apply. In fact, it would likely be the accumulation of too much power that would contribute to splintering the religion, although the tendency toward divisiveness would exist anyway.

The truth is...the whole world is ALREADY under "one religion".
It's called "SURVIVAL".
The problem is, we haven't yet learned how to survive without threatening the survival of others, regardless of what "religion" we profess.
