How do you "Listen to God" when you meditate?

Question

I have been doing more meditation than usual, and someone suggested that I try listening to God. I was too embarrassed to ask at the time, but HOW does one do this? Any serious suggestions?

Usually, when what I end up with is hearing my own desires, opinion etc. Is there some way to get past that in my meditation?

You added "Usually, when what I end up with is hearing my own desires, opinion etc".... that is exactly what most Christians are doing when they "listen to God". A few of them are likely hearing the same voice that the guy down in the alley on 5th street hears, except it tells him to yell at the garbage cans for being lazy.

Be careful when you meditate. How do you meditate? Types of meditation that require you to blank out your mind are demonic. The Holy Spirit is supposed to be in control of your thoughts. If you blank out your mind, evil spirits can enter in. Where there is a vaccumn, there is room for anyone to enter. Then the voice you hear is not the voice of God. If you want to hear the vocie of God, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and reveal Himself to you. When God speaks, there is no confusion.

Well you have to be in the living in the Spirit and not living in the flesh and then he can speak. You will know it is God if what you hear is not going against the scriptures and the being of who we are tuaght that God is in the Bible. Like if someone said they killed someone because God told them to....then it was not God....because God says do not kill...in the bible. It usually always glorifies him and you will have the peace and discernment when it truly is the Lord speaking through his Holy Spirit which lives inside of each saved individual.

I don't meditate, I pray. God is a still small voice. He speaks in many other ways than just during meditation and prayer. When your spirit is in tune with God more, then you will be more open to hearing His voice. We are to put our flesh under subjection to the spirit, because flesh will hear carnal things. You hear God in your spirit. Read the bible more, that is God's words and He will speak to you in that way also. God Bless.

I speak to God just as I write these words to you now. I have a conversation with Him each day. My prayers are conversations that follow a pattern. I start every prayer with the following: "Most merciful God, not my will, but yours be done." I repeat that phrase often during my prayers. Sometimes I will do so for tens of times just to quiet my mind and make it open to hearing from my Creator.

Or take a particular scripture and keep meditating on that single verse.

I always listen to James Brown (The God of Funk) when I meditate......GET DOWN! Huh! Ow! Call the doctor..Help me......oooowww!

Meditation is not about religion. You are not supposed to think about or try to listen to anything. The goal is to relax the body and mind and not to think at all.
