I am doing a report.
I would like to get examples of discrimination.
I mean:
1 Specifically, what prompted the discrimination (besides you being black)?
2 What was the situation?
3 Where did it happen (city & state)?
4 When did it happen? I am doing a report about RECENT acts, so please do not respond about what happened in the 60s (not that it is not important--please don't misunderstand me--just that my report is about incidences of bigotry AFTER the year 2000.)
5 What did you DO about it? Did you call the police?
If so, what did THEY do about it? Were the parties involved properly prosecuted?
If not, why do you think they were not?
Also, sorry, this report DOES NOT INCLUDE acts of police brutality--again, not that it is not important, just not what this report is about (why? because I am writing about COMING into conflict, not incidents where there is already a conflict, such as an arrest).
6 Did media properly report on it?
Ok?
Thank you for your stories in advance:

#1 Discrimination took place because I was a black female in a upscale department store.
#2 I went into the department store to do some spring clothes shopping. As usual the clerks immediatly didn't asked if I needed assistance, they just followed me around the whole time. When I tried on my outfits, they were spying outside of the dressing room door to see if I stole anything. I went to the clerk to ask if they had some sandles in another size, they clerk acted as if she didn't see or hear me. She rolled her eyes and walked away. I kept my cool & rung up my items at another desk.
#3 Fayetteville North Carolina
#4 march 3, 2007 (saturday around 3ish)
#5 I did nothing. Complants to her supervisor wouldn't matter. No need for police. Just got poor customer service.
#6 Didn't contact media
My post might not help. Basically i'm a well educated black female, that came from a good background & family. Whenever I go somewhere what i accomplished don't matter. People use stereotypes & discrimination automatically. Some assume all blacks may be lazy, or have attitudes etc. I'm 26 and I wonder what it was like 30-100 years ago. Gl with your report.

Some of the discrimination is subtle, and not always intended to be negative. For example, I am considered a little more hip and invited to events where I didn't expect an invitation. You must understand, I am fifty years old in a place that hasn't had many black people (Seattle) and I think I am a "symbol" of hipness among women who did not grow up with much exposure to hipness. It's both exasperating and amusing. People guess openly (and not usually correctly) at my political leanings and cultural experiences. If ONLY I could call the police! LOL!

I was told by the police to drop the charges of assault because it would cause me problems with my neighbors and that I should move. San Diego 1980

I was told I couldn't apply for the job because of the color of my skin. Shreveport Louisiana 1985

I was told they couldn't hire me because of my race and gender. Traverse City Michigan 1992

I wasn't hired as a direct employee and continued to make less , do more and get paid less. 2002 Chicago IL

I was at the counter first and had to wait through four people before they would acknowledge me. 2004 merriville In

In each case I did not report it and just took it, knowing full well nothing would be done because of the color of my skin.

I am White....I guess racism comes in all colors....
