First off, the average person needs up 1.5 liters of water, taken from all sorts of foods and liquids each day. Other factors can vary the need. Body weight, Body Fat, sugar intake, amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet, smoking, drinking alcohol. In an extremely hot climate you need sodium, potassium and lots of water, whether you get that from juices or just plain water. Soft drinks and alcohol DO NOT quench your thirst, and in fact increase it.

The human body is about 70% water so water is very essential for your body. A person can stay without food for weeks but the body can only stay without water for one week.

Very much depends on the size of the body. The smaller the body the shorter time it can cope, also it is temperature and humidity dependant. I was always told as a rule of thumb: 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.
