My military service took a toll on my back, the VA diagnosed my scoliosis years ago, and my back had recently really started to act up, stiff and painful. I am wondering if I should ask them about a brace to help my posture.

The trouble is the muscles are out of place because of the misalignment of the spine. It's the muscles that hurt because they are being used (and overused) in an unnatural position. Yoga can help. Svaroopa yoga is easy and gentle but can be very powerful. It may be worth checking it out. This isn't the kind of yoga where you're twisted up like a pretzel though.

Corrective bracing in scoliosis is only good when the patient has not stopped growing yet. One thing you should ask your doctor is if the scoliosis is the idiopathic type. You see, scoliosis can also occur if there is something wrong with your back like a slipped disc which gives you pain hence you tend to assume a posture other than straight to relieve the pain.

I'm 19 and just had my scoliosis surgery. My doctor would not brace me, because it would have done no good. Since I've pretty much stopped growing, when I took the brace off, everything would return to the way it was. The best thing would be for you to ask your Doctor what your options are and which would be best for you. Hope you feel better!

I have scoliosis and several years ago a doctor fitted me for a brace. It was the worst thing imaginable! I couldn't stand it. You might have a different outcome but it seems to me that heat, massage, and rest is much more effective for back pain. Gentle exercises might be recommended also to strengthen the back muscles. Good luck....I am sure you wish for pain relief.
