Australian Shepherd's are very active dog's who need a great deal of exercise on a daily basis to prevent him from becoming bored or frustrated and developing destructive habits. They are very loyal and make great family pets.To occupy his time while you are away, give him some toys to play with (nothing he can choke on.) Rawhides are great for teething and will keep him occupied for a while. I'm not sure about letting him run alone in your backyard because I don't know how your yard is set up. It is possible that he will dig his way out from underneath a fence and get out- or if you live in an area where there are any other types of wild animals (i.e. coyotes).

Please click on this link and read all about Aussies. They are really an excellent breed!

I hate to tell you this but this dog is in the worst place it could possibly be. I'm not trying to be mean. These dogs are working dogs. They are bread to herd animals and do it all day and lie at night and listen and wait. So, it is sooo bored and nothing you can do for the few hours that people are home is going to help. It needs the 7-8 hrs. of outside and running and playing and the rest for sleeping and eating and being loved. My advice is to list it with the Aussie rescue Internet site. They are very well loved dogs and require really special people to tale care of them, farms and people with land and room for them to run. My niece got one for her son, same situation as you, he became aggressive because of the way he was living, not their fault, she had to work the kids went to school. It just wasn't fair for the dog. All breeds are different and most people fail to research the breed to see if they can deal with it. I am asking you as a dog lover to do you and your family a favor but more than that show this dog love by finding it a place to live that it will be happy. It's not your fault or the dogs, it's just a fact. Then after get a small easily contented dog that won't mind being home alone, maybe a 1-2 yr. old rescue from the humane society. Give this one a chance. Please. Good luck. God allow this family the courage to find a great home for this wonderful animal that you created and make it the perfect home for this dog and allow this family the freedom to do this with no regrets that they are doing the correct thing. Bless them with another dog to fit their lifestyle and their needs and a good home for another dog that needs one. Thank you. Amen.

I have a border collie pup she LOVES toys from www.fatcatinc.com! Many wal-marts and target stores carry these toys. They are very well made, and the seams are hard for my pup to separate. The ‘On the Lamb’ toy, is very cute for herding dogs.

Nylabones are also great. Kong and hav-a-ball-kongs are also great. My vet told me to stuff the kong with food and place it in the freezer. I give this to my dog when she is alone in her crate. Interactive toy are also very helpful, my dog has a food ball that drops kibble as she rolls it around. Aussies and Borders are very smart breeds, and need lots of mental stimulation or they can develop anxiety. Try teaching new tricks using positive training methods. When my dog is hyper I do some free shaping exercise with the clicker and it calms her down quickly. One of her cutest tricks is picking up her toys and dropping them in her toy box, this is a great way to use the herding instinct.

Please try Puppy Kindergarden! It is a great place for the dog to socilize and learn new skills. Agility class is also an ideal solution for your pup!

Get another dog has a campion, or get a pet sitter to come by and take him for a walk during the day. These dogs are very active,
leave a chew toy for him, leaving him in the back yard all day is not good. ZIf he starts barking alot one of the neighbors might complain, then you will have another problem.
I think maybe leave a radio on-sounds crazy but it will be some noise for him.

Get him a Kong toy, and when you leave you can stuff treats (peanut butter works good too in small amounts) into it so he has to work to get them out... keeps him entertained for a while!
