I am a United States citizen. I am going to a major university to become a teacher. I am a Muslim and very proud of it. I have worn my veil since I was nine. I don't keep up with it like I should. I wear tight revealing clothes and I don't feel very modest. I feel that I make my religion look bad. So would it be really disgraceful if I decieded to stop wearing it. What do you think

Islam is such a peacful religion. Wearing it was my choice. I was born and raised in the U.S. I don' t want to denounce my religion, I just want to take off my veil. I'm a very trendy chick sporting off gucci jeans and prada shoes. I just don't want to make my religion look bad

Plus I feel that I attract more attention with it on. The veil is supposed to protect you from lustful eyes. My veils are brightly colored and are coordinated with my daily outfit.

Islam is not bad and I don't appreciate anyone stating that. It is such a beautiful peaceful religion. I am very happy that I am apart of it. In no way do I feel oppressed. I drive a BMW 645 convertible. I do all that i please. My religion just guides me on the right path. Islam is a way of life, its the true word of god

By the way my veil doesn't cover my face and isn't what you would see in movies. It just covers my hair kind of like what the nuns wear in a church but a little more hip.

i only begun to wear the hijab about 4 years ago when i turned 20.
i get what you say about representing your religion; that's how i thought of it. long before i started wearing the hijab i resisted wearing it cuz i wanted to make sure that when i wore it i would do it properly. u know no tight clothes, full length abaya and head scarf (i live in the middle east, so!!!). i didn't want ppl looking at me and thinking 'hah!good image she's spreaing about islam!'.
four years later i'm still struggling to come to terms with that. sometimes i become lax about the hijab and then i wonder 'hey if i'm sucking at it why should i wear it?', but other times (and they're greater in no.) i think that that's what the hijab is all about.
Fighting myself with the temptation of simplicity, acceptance, wearing cool clothes, etc.

but i do know that one day it'll come off. for a short time i know it will. i'll given in to the temptation and do it and then realise what i'm missing and go back to wearing it. this i know because wearing the hijab is not easy and it's an everyday struggle and fight.
Trust me what you're feeling is completely normal. i'm not advising you take it off. just think deep and careful about it. perhaps really taking it off would help you understand the beauty and truth of it.
just don't listen to the ppl who tell you to take it off cuz they hate islam/are ignorant about it/don't have a clue what the hijab is. Talk to the women around you. God will eventually guide you.

No it would not be disgraceful. Islam is a culture as well as a religion and the major custom of the U.S is NOT to wear a veil. When I lived in Saudi, I had to dress like them (it didn't matter what I believed) because it was their culture. Well, you are in THIS culture and I think you should dress like it. You are more of an "odd ball" with a veil here than you are without it.

what i could get after a search is that Veil is a cultural issue while Hijab means hiding the hair , having full sleeves and proper trousers reaching to the ankles are mentioned but coverining face is no where, so i think it does not make a great difference if you do not cover your face.....and secondly the dress should not be that tight to reveal the body structure !thats what i know..

Who said you absolutely had to? I am a muslim and I did wear full hijab while attending college myself, and had no problems. The most I got was questions about it, and I just went to the point and said I liked it. I do. You don't have to wear it if you don't want to. The Quran says to dress modestly, lengthen the garments, and make your actions match your words. I didn't see anything about covering the hair. It's absolutely up to you. Good luck in whatever you so choose. :)

I've heard people says it is absolutely mandatory and say it is not necessary. I do not know who to believe anymore. However I do know you must be modest in your dress, so tight revealing clothes won't cut it. May Allah guide us all.

It would probably help you in terms of mobility. More freedom of movement is not a bad thing. It may be easier to go to school, meet people and get jobs. I would go talk to the imam and your parents, first.

Hi there,
It is really good that you are proud to be a muslim, but on the other hand wearing veil is a liberty curbing ritual in Islam, If you know that you are good and you can handle situations properly, you should go ahead and unwear it now.
