Do you think that it's presuming a lot to think one knows what "God's will" is.

The people who say that base their entire lives on presumption and conjecture. It tends to keep them and their children ignorant and carries on generation to generation without end. S-c-a-r-y.

Simply because it makes them feel good and takes of the responsibility off their shoulders. When a person really works hard for something & doesn't get it , the conclusion normally is that God didn't will it. Now this is obyiously, a very comfortable thought, becuse a little introspection will always point reveal our mistakes & shortcomings. Humanbeings are the most narcisstic creatures & can never believe that they dont have the potential for achieving something. So poor God gets the blame!

buttercup, you're right.

I know of this 'believer' who was a teacher of a high school who was interested in a girl 10 yrs his junior. The guy bought a new car, and frequently made himself available to ferry her to and from church. Having created such 'opportunities' he married her quite soon after.

After marrying her, he dumped the car for a much humbler model and he said this "God has willed that I marry her!" Thank God!

About a year later, the two of them frequently quarreled and he said "I'm wondering if the marriage is God's will.

I was laughing in my heart. The guy created all these opportunities for himself, then turned to say it was God willed. And when things turn out not the way he wanted, he suspected if it is not God's will.

These people are living JOKES.

God has nothing to do with the likes of these.

Some use this phrase because they have not studied the scriptures and become fully grounded in their beliefs. I cannot recall in my 40+ years as a practicing Christian ever using the phrase.

That said, we do have the 66 books of the bible as the revelation of God's will to mankind, so I do think we should have a fair understanding of many things, but not all, about the will of God.

I pray God's will in my life so He can lead me and guide me because only He knows the future. If I make a decision, it may not benefit me in the end, but I pray God's will and He can answer the way He sees fit and I know it will be okay. Noone knows what God's will is because the bible teaches his ways are not our ways. No one can possibly know what He has in store for the future.

I think there are two types of people that use "because it's God's will."

There are those that are simply expressing their faith in God when presented with a situation that they can't comprehend/explain. They are saying while they don't understand, they know he does and trust him.

Then are those that don't really believe in God and are extremely arrogant. They prey on those that do believe in God and have their trust by getting the victims to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do by claiming to know God's will. I know most preachers/pastors/ministers/priests are good people that are trying to help others. But there are the bad eggs that use their position of authority in a religion to hurt others by claiming to know God's will without ever bothering to ask Him.

No it's not presumptuous at all. The Bible is very clear what God's will is and this is it.

II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
