Typically, odometers are plugged directly into the transmission. Either the cable broke on your gran am or the odometer is dead inside the dash board. You can try getting up underneath the car and take a quick look at the cable. If it is in bad shape, then you most likely found the problem. However, if you don't see anything Wrong with it, then most likely, the odometer itself is shot!
You will have to completely remover your dash board and maybe even un-hinge your steering column from under the dash support structure. Then struggle with replacing your odometer and reinstalling your dash and steering column.

Hi There!

This is an easy question with a big answer.

The odometer on a 1989 Grand Am is electronically driven. There is a little step motor that drives two gears which drive the odometer and trip odometer. The step motor can go bad. The gears can go bad. The main odometer or trip odometer can get bound up and go bad.

The Odometer and trip odometer with step motor is usually replaced as one unit. If i repaired a unit; I would charge you $150.00 for repair and $50.00 for labor. The parts i would use would be brand new.I would also set the correct mileage and give two year warranty.

You could also go down to junkyard. Prices range here from $50.00 at pick n pull to $100.00. The mileage would need to be reset. The unit may be bad since it is used. The warranty is usually 30 days.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!
