please wait until your tattoo has "set" before tanning.
trust me on this one. do the spray on tan for the prom, and after your tattoo has "set" ALWAYS use extra high spf on it whenever you are in the sun. I have 6 tattoos and I use at least a 35 spf chapstick on my tats plus regular tanning lotion with sunscreen
whenever I am in the sun (which is at least 2 hours everyday all summer long) and have had no problem with ink fadiing or discoloring.

Tanning ruins tattoos. Over time, tanning will fade the tattoos color and even blur the image. Best thing to do is minimize exposure and be sure to always have a high SPF lotion on the tattoo. But still, over time, the tattoo will be ruined If you are getting a new tattoo, you should avoid tanning for at least its healing time (which is 2ish weeks) but its best to avoid tanning for a month.

call the tattoo parlor that did the tattoo and get advice there.
There are different inks used, so some may cause you problems after a trip to the tanning bed.
If you don't want to call, I would put a small bandage on it and just cover around it with some makeup on prom night....
Go out and have a blast but be careful
WOW I just had a flashback about my senior prom. Way back in 1973 !!!!!!!!!!!

I kinda was going to have the same problem, I wanted to get mine done on my birthday but I can't tan for four weeks after getting the tattoo, so I planned on going tanning for the week prior to getting my tattoo, then a few weeks after I get the tattoo I plan on going tanning but using labels cut out in the shape of my tattoo to protect it. Any type of office supply store sells blank labels you can buy for cheap. Make sure the scabs are healed before doing this because the labels have adhesive so you don't want them to peel off any scabs and mess up your new tattoo.

your tattoo should ALWAYS be protected from the sun - whether a month after or five years after. this will help preserve the quality. why don't you just use fake tan? which is more important - being tan for one night you won't think about two years from now or having a tattoo that doesn't look like crap ten years from now? plus, what about your skin?

it would be pretty silly to go to a tanning salon earlier than 4 weeks after getting your tattoo. the reason they tell you to wait this period is because your tattoo is still healing, and doing something like PURPOSELY BURNING your tattoo would really be the worst thing for it. not only could this make it very itchy and sore, it might also get infected, and worst of all, make your tattoo fade, which, if you actually cared about your tattoo at all, is worse than looking slightly pale for your prom.

Keep the area covered by clothing or a bandana, just there and then you should be ok. I would be really careful. Using sunscreen or even zinc oxide is still playing with fire, you can screw the whole thing up. which is more important the damn tan or having gone through what you went through to get the tattoo and then screwing it up.
Be your own judge, you have to live with the results.

I don't recommend it you need to make sure it is fully healed personally I wouldn't go in a tanning bed with tattoo's at all.

OK,here is what I did. I took a patch or aluminum foil and taped it over my tatt. Assuming your tatt on't show when your in a dress, it will be fine to have a pale spot around your tattoo. I did that til it was healed properly, and then I just used sunscreen. Kinda ghetto, but oh well. It works.

ANY tatto artist will tell you to stay the hell out of a tanning bed for the next month or so...i do believe that was his exact words...unless you want to go back and have it colored in again. and even when you have had it done for a while, i would still recommend you put some sunscreen on it. you want it to stay pretty right??!
