I have a public speaking thing I have to do in a month and a half. Obviously I have anxiety because I'm already worrying about it! You can't really practice for these things either unless youre in toastmasters (which isn't in my town). So I really want to use Klonopin, just for public speaking and not for every day.

What do I say to the doctor to convince him to prescribe it? The doctor here at my university wouldn't even consider prescribing it, and I've heard it can be hard to get from any doctor.

Any advice wold be appreciated!

You need to tell the doc you think you need something like this or zoloft or something. You need to tell him some of your stories of anxiety attacks or whatever. He'll determine what you need or if you need anything.

Now, everyone gets anxious about public speaking, presentations, etc... you have to realize that.

Also, you can practice for this stuff. First, spend plenty of time practicing by yourself in front of mirror(record it if at all possible so you can review your mistakes, etc...) When you practice by yourself take it in increments; do the first 15 seconds of the speech a couple of times, then do the first 30 seconds of the speech however many times, then do the first 45 seconds of the sppech, etc.... This really does help. Once your comfortable with your memorization(knowing that you know your lines is extremely calming) and you've reviewed your tapes and corrected any erratic gestures, then you need to find a group of people to practice on. Friends can be wierd, but they will critique you honestly. See if you can get some people at work to sit down for you to practice in front of. The more times you practice in front of live people the more comfortable you'll feel.

All of this sounds hard, but drugs relly aren't always the solution. They can help, but your doc isn't going to give you anti-anxiety drugs because you say your nervous for a speech, because like I said, everyone gets nervous for public speaking events.\

Good Luck.

No doctor should give you Klonopin for isolated situational anxiety. You'd be better off getting a yoga dvd from the library, or learning relaxation skills. It's also a good idea to practice to friends or family, and in front of a mirror. You could also drink some valerian root tea.

Of course the doctor at your university won't give it to you! It's a fun drug! So is Ativan, I once went to the ER, cause well my room mate dragged me because she thought I needed a psych consult, which by the way I didn't, but figured I may as well waste some tax payers dollars, anyways, I told them I couldn't sleep so they gave me Ativan to put me to sleep and sent me home after the psych consult and getting annoyed 'cause well quite frankly, I didn't need to be there. It didn't make me sleepy, but I did sing some really funny songs and do some dancing. Haha, anyways you can do that, go to an ER and say you've had insomnia for days and you'll get some. If you really want a 'script try a psychiatrist off campus. Don't tell 'em it's for public speaking, pretend you have anxiety attacks, but NOT depression or any form of substance abuse, so you've never drank in your life and you don't even believe in using medication, but you're really desperate blah, blah, blah. He might just want to give you an SSRI, so see another one until you find one that likes to give out what you want. Ooooooooooooooooooh and if that's too much of a bother, I'm sure you could find a guy on campus who sells it illegally and if you don't want to do anything illegal, just have a drink or 5 before you have to do your public speaking.

I'm sure your local heroin dealer would not have the same scruples as your doctor. Why not try them? It'll work just as well, and you won't have to tell any lies. Not immediately, anyway.

Sorry if I sound a little terse, but I'm a prison doctor, and I regularly admit young men whose last memory before waking up in police custody was swallowing a couple of Xanax, or clonazepam or similar benzodiazepines. Although they don't remember the exact sequence of events, what happened is the reason that I am their designated doctor for up to three years. These drugs are not trivial. Your doctor sounds very sensible, and obviously has your best interests at heart, even if you don't realise it. Could I suggest you grow up? Anxiety in public speaking is normal. It is not a medical condition. It gets better with practice, and some pretty basic relaxation techniques.

So what you are saying is you want a script for a heavy drug when you don't need that drug everyday.

Stop bothering your doctor for things other people have to wait in line for. The way it works is. You discuss your probs with him. IF he thinks you have a prob THEN he prescribe a med for you. And you don't get to pick the med. You don't go into their office and tell them like you know better. Be informed but realize he's the one with the certificates on the wall. Don't like what he says go to a new Dr.

Klonopin is a controlled substance, i.e. addictive, and no doctor would prescribe it unless he truly felt you needed it.

They won't help you, if anything they will make you feel groggy and doped up. We only give it to clients that have severe anxiety and PTSD. The reason why no one will give it to you is because you don't need it. It is prescribed only when absolutely necessary. You have to go to a couple of apts before it is prescribed where I work. If you want something to calm your nerves St. Johns Wart works really well.

You could always seduce him. It worked for me.

The scary part is, I'm not even making it up.
