Using W98, Ive seen the dialogue box a million times, but if I've already chosen an opening program, (incorrectly) it has that icon and there's no "open with" choice when you right-click on the file itself.

It is a zip file, and i've never needed winzip or anything in the past, however, i recently went from Walmart/Netscape (which had it's own unzipper) to Quest DSL, maybe i havent downloaded a .zip since then. I associated it to Wall/Net and then WallNet said it could only make it a text file. Do I need winzip or whatever to open zip files now?

Actually, I'm not sure but this is what I would try:

Try right-clicking on the icon, select Properties. See if it tells you what type of file it is.

Open a Word document and try Insert, file.

If that doesn't work, try opening Notepad, then click File, Open -- here you will browse to find the file.

If Notebook opens it, click File, Save as. Save it as a txt file. You can insert it in Word or select all the text and copy it into a Word file -- if this works.

I'd be interested in knowing if it works for you.

right click the file and hit properties. Under the general tab it will tell you what program it opens with. To the right of that there is a button that says change. click the button, and select the program you want to open the file. Note: all files with that extension will open with that program after you make the change. if you want to just use a different program once, right click it an select open with.
