Hi,

Have been turned into a bird lover since last year. I am tempted to get a baby grey parrot as pet. Could anyone share any experience or advice?

Thanks.

Just be prepared to spend lots of time with it.

parrots, and ESPECIALLY Greys, are incredibly smart and therefore needy of interactment. These birds often end up in shelters and rescues because they develop problems like Plucking and Screaming because they were not offered enough to stimulate their brains. They can also live for 60 years, so make sure you are willing to have this bird for life - or have someone lined up to take care of it if you should be away.

They're also VERY expensive to care for...you'll need to find an avian certified vet if you want a vet that knows what he's talking about, and the are hard to find and expensive. I just spent $350 for ONE parrot for an annual exam. Add in a huge cage ($300 and up) lots of toys (that get destroyed quickly and need to be replaced all the time) and food (they need a variety, not like a dog or cat where you buy one big bulk bag and just feed it that).

But, the Pros are also wonderful, they're a very rewarding pet, and will provide you with years of entertainment and love.

Hi. I bought myself an African Grey about 10 weeks ago. She is now 15 weeks old. I would recommend, buying an African Grey. She is like a child in the house! When I got her, I had to feed her with a spoon bent on both sides. She likes to eat apples, pears and carrots. I feed her special wet food mixed with pellets and carrot and a fruit during the day and at night, give her dry seed which consists of sunflower and pellets. If you decide to buy one, don't let it eat too much sunflower, because she will get bone deformities and will be underfed. Also never give it chicken bones as it can break in mouth, get stuck and you loose your bird. I took my bird for wing clipping at 12 weeks, because before 12 weeks the feathers are still growing and have blood in them. Also never clip the beak, and never take the bird to a vet. It is where it will catch diseases. Use a nail file to trim the birds toes, but don't go too deep. If you go to deep, and it starts bleeding the bird will taste blood, and start biting its feet, basically bleeding to death.

Hope this helps!

Buy a girl... they are such great pets. They learn to speak at a faster rate than most parrots. I can't say too much because the most I can say is that they are intelligent and very caring for a good owner.

Have 3 congo's and 4 tim's atm. Congo's as stated in prior posts are extremely smart and will not only mimic words,but sounds as well. I very much prefer the Congo to the Tim's for a few reasons;

1 Tim's (yes I know its Timnehs) have an annoying tone in their chirp

2 Congo's can spice things up with their "different" sounds( have to own one to understand)

3 Congo's appeal more to others and seem more friendlier

Parrots involve a huge commetment. Do not get one if you do not have at least 2-4 hours to spend with it. They are very needy. I suggest before you get it to read as much as possibe.

They're like smarter than I am, so if you own one, I'd say you have an ethical commitment to keep it mentally occupied.

Personally, I'd put money into a pair of binoculars and then you'd be able to love all sorts of birds, but to each their own.

Just be very careful as to what you say around a grey. They can mimic your voice and speak your words.
