military son w/ no previous violent hx arrested for shooting friend w/ friend's gun off-base. Son under impression gun not loaded, did not check properly. Friend seriously injured. Son provided first aid until EMS response. Son initially lied to police as to who shot who...(? I have no idea why....panic?) Is being charged with attemtped murder and held by civilain authorities. What are the chances that something like this can be reduced? ...No preceding argument...these guys were friends..they were going to go out to the range...do not understand why this is the charge...We have already spent 2500 for an atty, he has not spoken with the victim yet, barely with my son...yet has said that it will be 10,000 to represent him for a trial. (He goes to the grand jury next....) I am afraid that he will end up with a public defender.. ...What should be the next step? What is likely to happen to him?

Your best hope is the victim. Once he is interviewed he should be able to state the shooting was an accident.

Well first off all his military career is more than likely O V E R over. Second of all he lied to the police. Third of all with his military background I find it out to believe he hasn't been better trained in arms safety. He should have checked if it was loaded or not. You son is screwed. All I can say is you better pray the person he accidentally shot doesn't die if he does then.... Well I don't think I have to tell you what will happen in that case. Oh yeah one more thing it doesn't matter whether or not the victim presses charges, the state will.

Your son should have come clean and told the truth, but there is nothing that can be done to correct that now. As far as the attempted murder is concerned, how can the police justify charging him with that, unless they have dug up evidence to show that there was a rift between your son and the guy he shot, and compunded by his initial lie about the shooting , led them to believe there is more to this case than just a negligent injury?
If your son is in the service, why not see if the JAG section can defend him. This lawyer you got doesn't seem to be doing much of anything, other than collecting fees for no work done.

If Dick Cheney's was an accident, this shouldn't be any different. If I were you, try to get on your local news channel, or national news channel, and push the issue that if it was an accident for Dick Cheney, why can't it be an accident in this case? By the way you might want to ditch the court appointed atty, and invest some money into a good one. Hope to see you on the news. Push the issue!!!!

Sounds a little fishy, he is military trained, and he did not check to see if the weapon was empty ? He might be better off is the "friend" dies. no witnesses. And he lied, accident, right

well you should ask the victim to not press charges and tell them it was an accedent. that should clear it all up.
if not plead guilty and have your son tell then hes sorry he lied to them and that he panicked.
