I can cuss like a sailor, I can drink like a fish, I will fight a man for the thrill and never have a regret, I've come to accept myself for what I am. In no way will I ever preach to others my view on religion, and I don't pretend to have an impact over your life. All I can say is that God has "spoken" to me, before that I promise, I would have ended up going a very bad direction. When it happens, you just know. There aren't words to describe it because it doesn't come by way of words. It's like watching an entire two hour movie in a second and retaining every word, ever verse, every scene ver batum. I would compare it to the matrix, when Neo sits in the chair and receives a "program" that tells him how to do Kung Fu, or hotwire a helicopter. Kinda like the information is uploaded into you.
I also think that God is NOT a fair and just God as we would all beleive, if it where, everyone would have had the experience that I had. It sucks because I don't have to question it. Kinda like all the people that walked with Jesus, they got an unfair advantage because the Mesiah was standing right there.

There are times when God may choose to speak in an audible voice but that is rare-----instead He may speak through another person (a willing vessel) He may simply impress the thought into your head-----i remember one day on the way to work He impressed upon my mind Joshua !:8-------i had never read the book of Joshua before so I was eager to get to the chapel (I'm a nurse in a hospital) to read the passage-------sometimes he may use animals to convey an idea or a principal He would like to draw attention to.and frequently in prayer He will just reveal a truth to you-------how do you know it is REALLY from God?-----if it is really from God you will have great peace with the decision------if the idea or thought causes uneasiness or confusion then you will know it was not from Him. The point is He uses different ways at different times for different people.

You know i agree with what your saying in many ways but the thing is that we cant really know. God talks to each of us in different ways just because they say "talk" it doesnt necesarily mean talk physically it could be by signs, a dream or many other things. Although some may exaggerate we can not really now for sure unless we have experienced it ourselves.
Good Luck and Keep The Faith

God does not speak as we do. I think of God speaking to you as being your conscience. It lets you know when you should or shouldn't do something. Sometimes we listen, sometimes we don't.
Also, if we've been praying for an answer to something in our lives, and something happens, it is like God answering us. Example, my husband got offered a management position in a job he has only been at for 3 weeks. He didn't want to accept the position and decided he wouldn't. I prayed that God would let His will be done, and that if God wanted Him to have the job, He would prepare things so that it would happen, then at the same time if He didn't want it to happen, that it wouldn't.
Needless to say, my husband is now working in that management position. ;) To me, the way it all came about was God's way of letting my husband know that he wanted him to take the position.

God deals with individuals in individual ways... but, yes, God can speak to individuals at times... but not as to the Prophets of old... there are no longer Prophets of God on earth... there is no need for them as God's Word was complete in Christ... no revision has been made or ever will be made... so no need for Prophets... but God dose speak to some... and it is usually never mentioned as it is only between God and The individual....and yes... I have heard him.... ten words total... the first when I was told I was not welcome in a holy place and to get out... the second on the occasion of my first communion the day after my Salvation some 29 year later.... the first...." Get out you are not welcome here.".... then 29 yrs later... after receiving the cup and thanking God i clearly heard... " you are welcome"... I know what I heard and I know with absolute certainty who spoke...... God has since made himself known tome in more subtle ways... I may not hear him audibly again till Heaven... I eagerly await that moment

Every born again Christian has living within them the spirit of God. The spirit guides us, corrects us, convicts us, comforts us, speaks to us, chastises us, lifts us up, in a hundred different ways. I've never heard a "voice". I constantly am in His "presence". It's very hard to describe...but yes, I talk to God. I know He hears, and He also answers.

Through meditation of prayer, you can speak to God. God is everywhere, he knows you better than you know yourself. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.
"they talk...in subtle ways?"
Yes they, me, or I am blessed to know that my prayers have been answered. Subtle? I think that is a poor choice of words because there is nothing subtle about having your prayers answered. I am filled with happiness that God has answered me, through my prayers to Jesus Christ the Son of God.
You need to try it. Pray, it's not going to kill you.

God speaks in many ways. Sometimes we need to be very attentive and listen, other times he makes it loud and clear. When it is loud and clear beware for God is awesome and powerful. Good luck!

I think it's an entirely personal experience, like a dream. No one can tell you you had a dream. There is no way to measure the "reality" of a dream. It exists on an entirely subjective basis. But you know.
