I just got a new .270 and I was wondering what everyone els used. But I guess it just depends on the area...

Area is the key word, the 270 is a find round for Deer, Muleys and Elk. It will also work on Black Bears just as well.

I have a 270 myself along with many others but for the mos t part, it stays in the safe. I love my Browning A-Bolt Medallion chambered in the 7mm Rem Mag., with a Leupold VeriXIII 4.5X14x50. It is my long range choice because I use allot of handguns for short to medium range.

Yes, it does depend upon the area. The .270 should do for all whitetail deer hunting though. It has enough power for certain and enough range for long shots. I started with a .270 and a .243 when I was a boy. I may take a .300 Magnum on trips if larger game than deer is in the area in which I hunt. In New Brunswick, I shot the biggest whitetail I have ever seen. It weighed 325 lbs. or so on the hoof. Hmm, it is the same size as I am. Mule deer and elk are bigger, and so are moose. I like a .340 mag for the latter.

A 300 savage.
A 270 is an excellent choice.

257's and under just don't have to power.
Most over a 30-06 is overkill.

In very heavily wooded areas, though, a 35 rem is a good choice.

No matter what you use, a good shot will do the job regardless of the caliber.

Good hunting, and be safe.

I've always felt anything 6mm or larger packs enough punch. With patience, a 22 caliber would work just fine as well.

I do most of my hunting in woods of central Wisconsin (rifle) with some hunting in Illinois (shotgun).

I rotate through my rife collection and use a different weapon every year. The cartridges I've used so far:

30-30 Win
243 Win
308 Win
35 Whelen
30-06 Sprg
280 Rem
454 Casull (rifle)
300 WSM

Currently in rotation:
303 British
12 ga. (I don't hunt shotgun zone very often)

I tend to be a Remington fan myself. However, I like to use different actions. I think the only action I don't have a rifle in is a single-shot, though I want to get a Ruger #1 in a 375 H&H one day (no idea why..I already have enough weapons to kill anything in North America)

For deer hunting...My buddy who lives in FL, but hunts throughout the Southeast uses a .270. Most people I know use .270, and a few use a .30-06.

I use a lever action .30-30.

Your .270 is a great all around gun I have taken deer and elk with mine. However i have retired my .270 it only shoots targets now. I started using a 7MM STW and and use it for everything now. Excelent downrange ballistics. I took My elk this year with one shot at about 480 yards according to the range finder. Also took a small mule deer last year at about 75 yards and with the barnes XLC hand loads the bullet stays together and punches clean through with out much meat loss.
Lots of memories with the .270 though

My favorite deer rifle is still my old Remington .25-06, Model 700 ADL purchase new in 1974. I have also taken deer with my .270 Winchester, a Weatherby Vanguard. This coming deer season I hope to try out a new Remington 673 Guide rifle in 6.5 Remington Magnum.

Happy hunting.

In close woods, Win 71 (348 cal), Ruger Redhawk (41mag) or Super Blackhawk (44mag)
In mixed country, whatever I'm in the mood for, but probably most often Rem 700 Mtn (7x57), without a lot of brand loyalty: Rem, Ruger, Win, Sauer, CZ
Hawken-style smoke-pole (50 or 54)
I'm with Floyd R. I have semi-retired my 6mm Rem and 257 Roberts, but I don't feel too overgunned with an 8x57. The 8x68 and 9.3x62 are a bit much.

I have used the following:
20 gauge with rifled slugs
12 gauge with rifled slugs
5 different models of T/C muzzleloaders (latest is an Omega)
.357 Ruger Blackhawk (borrowed from my father)
.45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk
.30-30 T/C Contender pistol (borrowed from a hunting buddy)
7-30 Waters T/C Contender pistol (borrowed from my father)

In Indiana, we are not allowed to hunt deer with a high-powered rifle (have they checked the ballistics of modern "magnum" muzzleloaders?). However, we are allowed to hunt with pistols chambered for high-powered rifle cartridges (.243 and up). Next year it is being proposed that we will be able to use rifles and carbines chambered for pistol cartridges of .357 diameter and larger and shorter than 1.700 inches empty brass. You can count on my getting a .44 Magnum to hunt with next season if the proposal indeed passes.

i used to use a .243 winchester with a 95 grain nozzler solid base but my cousins daughters are learning to hunt and they are using it. the last few years i have been using my 300 winchester mag or my 300 weatherby mag. they do a lot of damage with a body shot so i resort to head shots. i'm a meat hunter so the antlers don't have any value for me.
your 270 is probably one of the best all around rifles out there. i have friends that hunt elk, moose, sheep and bear with them with very good success.
