im 24 and never got them, do u think they may still pop up. do some people just never get them, and if so why? i heard that the wisdom teeth were more useful thousands of years ago when early humans had to chew tough meats and things like that, but they are losing their importance now. maybe in a few generations people wont be bothered with them!

the funny thing is i remember my dentist saying that he saw the start of them. but that was my old dentist, which i went to at least 6 or more years ago. i was told previously that my mouth is "crowded" as is, whatever that means. oh well, if they appear, they appear.

sorry DL but that IS how evolution works. im aware that cutting someones arm off will not cause humans to be born without arms (im familiar with the rats with the cut-off tails experiment) but not growing wisdom teeth is not comparable. an unnecessary trait is likely to dissapear over time. yes we still have an appendix for no apparent reason but who knows if it will still be there in the future. i think your logic and analogies are a little off, and most people who have already answered would agree.

and yeah, gum hurts really bad today. i think it really might be the wisdom tooth, going to make an appt tomorrow.

well DL, i'll go call my trusty neighborhood scientist right now and ask him what the deal is. my question is, lets say u believe in evolution and that we eveolved from apes into a hybrid "caveman" type of being and then gradually into what we are today.....do you think that thousands of years ago those apes or those cavemen had sets of teeth like we have today? no, they had larger jaws and teeth, look it up. our jaws are now smaller because we have larger brains, and dont need huge teeth for the food we eat. but either way, from what ive googled there is a definite debate going on between your ideas and mine so i guess i'll leave it at that.

NATALIE,

THE ANSWER TO THIS IS GENETICS. SOME PEOPLE HAVE 1 OR 2 MISSING, AND SOME DON'T HAVE ANY. THIS IS NOT THAT COMMON, BUT ONLY WITH A PANORAMIC X-RAY CAN PROVE THIS.

WHY DO YOU SAY THAT?

BECAUSE THE TEETH MAY BE IMPACTED BELOW THE GUMS WHERE THEY WOULD NEVER NATURALLY ERUPT.
WHETHER THESE THEETH WOULD NEED TO BE EXTRACTED WOULD BEST BE DETERMINED BY WHAT IS SEEN BY THAT X-RAY. A PANORAMIC X-RAY (radiograph) IS BEST FOR THIS.

LOL umm I'm Asian and I have wisdom teeth...i work for an oral surgery office and need to get them out soon. But we see plenty of patients, all races, plenty of Asians, and yes believe it or not, they have wisdom teeth. Some may think they do not have wisdom teeth because they are impacted, meaning they are still under the gums and may be in a horizontal position. But there are more cases were people do not have all four wisdom teeth or may not have any at all! But we do see cases when there are extra wisdom teeth. Make sure to ask your dentist for a panoramic xray to see if you have wisdom teeth!

Humans will never "evolve" out of having wisdom teeth. That's not how evolution works. They will always be there, in the same way that if you chopped off every human's left arm when they turned 24, humans would still be born with left arms until the end of time.
Some may just not come to the surface and therefore aren't a problem. But they probably were a problem in the caveman ages.

SORRY but this IS true. Evolution, by definition, is the killing off of weaker genes. The fact that we still have appendixes even though we don't use them proves MY point, not yours: that just because we don't use them doesn't mean they'll go away.

Evolution: There are purple rats and brown rats. Brown rats blend in to the environment. Purple rats stand out. Purple rats get eaten by owls because they are seen easier. Brown genes survive, purple genes disappear.

Basically, a gene has to be "killed off" in order to disappear from evolution.
Since there is no DEATH from wisdom teeth, wisdom teeth don't DIE out. I am right. Ask ANY scientist. Or your orthodontist.

Hi, I'm Josie an ex dental nurse. You are almost right, through evolution and good oral hygiene you do not need them as the teeth we have now last for the time that we are alive. So with time some people stop developing them, some have them but have no room for them to erupt and some unfortunate people have them partially erupt and that's when you will need to have them removed. the only way for you to see if you have them is to have an x ray taken by the dentist

It's pretty much the luck of the genetic draw. I only had two wisdom teeth, and my sister doesn't have any. At age 24, if you had wisdom teeth, you would at least be able to see "buds" growing under the surface of the gums in a panoramic x-ray. If they're not present by now, I suspect you don't have them. Count your blessings - you'll never have to have them removed!

I doubt your wisdom teeth will just "pop up" out of no where. When was your last dental x-ray? If you had wisdom teeth developing, the dentist would notice years before they erupt.

More and more people do not have wisdom teeth. The majority of people who do have wisdom teeth need to have them removed. I think we are evolving and eventually no humans will have wisdom teeth. Even though we don't need wisdom teeth, evolution takes a long, long time. Sounds like you are more evolved than the rest of us!

Wisdom teeth suck. I have an absesced one right now. But to answer your question everyone has wisdom teeth. Yours just haven't sprouted out. It's what we call impacted. Wisdom teeth truely are pointless though because they are a result of evolution. The cavemen needed them so they have been passed onto us.

what you've heard is right.
some people have got all the four wisdom teeth, others may have none. they may even pop up at a later age, there's no rule to it but it's better not to bother with them at all.
they are usually very sensitive teeth, pop up in various directions and create lots of problems which finally finally lead to extraction.
