a cult generally has a powerful human leader at some point, usually at the start, that uses heavy control over a group of people. i think a lot of local christian churches fall into that catagory. i have never figured out why a pastor and song leader is a full time paid position. the pastor is getting paid to do what the members should be doing. paid for music leadership? what a joke. what is church, a broadway play. how long does it take to prepare a serman? and then get paid for it? this is the making of a cult.

I think a cult requires one charismatic leader that obtains followers, so all religions begin as cults, but once they become institutionalized (have accepted dogma) they become a religion. For example, Koresh was a religious person that created a cult the same can be said of Jim Jones. In a cult, the charismatic leader has total control over those that follow him, a religion is not the same.

A cult is many times defined by technique of a set that is going outside the common bounds of authority for a particular faith. case in point, the Assemblies of God, the Lutherans, the Presbyterians, and Baptists are all diverse denominations, yet none are cults because all of them use the Bible and in reality the Bible. the needed theology is an same besides the undeniable fact that the translation mind-set to scripture is a touch diverse. Mormonism, on the different hand, has presented thoroughly diverse authorities - The e book of Mormon, The Pearl of significant cost, and the Doctrines and the Covenants, to boot to their earthly apostleship. those adjustments are fairly significant, and they bring about theology it truly is fairly assorted to different Christian denominations. diverse aspects of authority is the numerous qualifier even as determining a cult, and Mormonism actual qualifies - by technique of the e book definition. Edit: the different answerers are properly desirable that technically all religions are cults. it truly is genuine. besides the undeniable fact that, from a Christian attitude, the products that i discussed above distinguish particular communities as a cult which could be seen outside of mainstream Christianity. Mormonism is a cult of its own.

Cults are those that follow a self proclaimed saviour of some sort.

The 1st century Christians were considered a cult.

So it is difficult to define just what is a cult, usually they are a breakaway group form an established religion

Jehovahs Witnesses - They forbid friendships outside of the religion with the excuse "bad association spoils useful habits", this makes a persons entire social life and all friendships dependant on them being a jehovahs witness and if they change or do things "the society" as they call it disapproves of then no one is allowed to associate with them anymore. They also strictly forbid questioning policy or even looking for answers to unanswered questions, saying to do so is blasphemy and unforgivable.

It's an overly flexible term abused by Christians to describe any denomination or religion that doesn't believe in precisely the same things they do and worship in precisely the same way they consider proper.
