I am the head poultryman at the largest poultry farm in the county, so let me see if I can help. Really ther isnt much diffrence in the ammount of noise made by the birds, however I have noticed that most Bantam species make less noise, and when they do they are genraly quiet. All birds will make noise, especially when they feel in danger, so be expecting that, and chickens scare easily. if you need details email me at Yrbirdraisers@yahoo.com .
Sincerely, waine

There isn't a breed of hen that is particularly quiet, it really does depend on the individual.

All hens will make noise just after laying, they sort of announce it to the world. However, they soon quieten down and it's not as loud as a rooster's crow.

All chickens make a quiet, relaxing sort of bawk, bawk noise to communicate. However, I live in town and my neighbours say they like the sound.

If you live in town, just avoid the roosters.

It actually depends on the individual hens. Any hen can be very noisy, especially when she starts laying, sometimes even louder than the roosters, even though they do not crow like a rooster. They can cluck very loudly and a lot of the time. I raise many different breeds, and I don't really see it as a difference in the breeds, it is more of a difference in individual personalities of the birds.

Hens don't normally make a lot of noise. It's the roosters you have to avoid.
