My friend, Alyssa, is now dating a 20 year old. I assume, by you all reading this you may think it's sick. I thought it was too until I got to know him. They're basically on the same maturity level. They both know they're NOT allowed to have sex, until she is of age, and he respects that. So, what I really want to know is, why when people see these ages "16 & 20", they freak out and say such rude things.

Because from the age of 16 to 20 people change so much than they do from say 20 to 24. However, this does not give people the right to say rude things. As far as sexual relations go it is good that they are not having sex. He could get charged with statutory rape should her parents want to press charges. This has happened to many young men and they are labeled rapist because the law views that a 16 year old can not rightfully consent to sexual relations. I don't think its sick, just maybe not so smart at this point in time for them to be dating that's all. Wish them the best.

Because you may not think in a matured way or take a stable decision .... That's the age when you will start to have such feelings and want to try out all such things which is not safe!!!!
So it better to stay away from such things until you are independent and can make your own decision...
All may not be genuine they make look very committed at the beginning but latter they may go for many other people for his or her desires
So do not hurry in the beginning itself!!!

4 year difference. Honestly, not any sicker than a 24 year old and a 20 year old, or a 10 year old and a 6 year old. Who chooses the line. Societal norms. When does society say we grow up. When we are 45. So, I don't want to get into this because I know I will receive alot of hate mail. I definately have my opinion. I believe in obeying the laws of the land and for anyone who chooses not too they are putting themselves at risk. Of course, life wouldn't be exciting without people who occasionaly push the envelope. But again, if it were my daughter, I'd let him know I have a 9mm and a shovel, and I'm not afraid to use it.

As long as he's aware of the sex thing and can keep it under control it's O.K.
It can get scary though. I read about two H.S. seniors that had been going out with 16 year olds. When they broke up with them the girls told their parents that they had sex with the guys. The parents called the cops and the boys were arrested and charged with statutory rape. They are now serving time. Woman scorned?

Men are usually a few years behind women in maturity. So, actually, that aspect's not surprising at all.
As long as he's not taking advantage of her, I don't see a big problem with it. Some 16 year olds are very mature for their age.

I know of two kids - one's 16(almost 17) and the other's 23. They do love each other, but their relationship's long distance. And yes, it's all done over the computer. The girl doesn't say much about is, since she knows it is probably not too well favored by her parents if they knew the full extent of it all.
