Can you resolve an arguement?
<<< i post this before, but there is more info!>

Me and my friend are arguing over a word..?
I have a question about the word "BABE"?

Me and my friend just got into an arguement about something.

He said its acceptable for a man to call a man babe.

As in,, on Sopranos, Tony might ask a guy, ?can you get this for me ,babe?
or on full house Jesse would say to Danny, "good job on that gig babe"

I told him its not used for men to say to another man the word "babe".. I said it is used for females. Like if a man asked a woman "Are you feeling ok, babe?. the only acception would be if a female called her significant other babe.

Who is right?

***** I found this on the internet...... I guess this means I lost the arguement???
Danny: Jess, are you just bein' this nice to get out of blowing up more balloons?
Jesse: Absolutely! Ciao, babe!

Tony: Cheer me up, babe!
Silvio: Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in..

first of all, itys been ages since i watched Full House, and the three male leads should not be in anyway used as a definition of manliness.

that said, from what I recall, when Jesse used 'babe' he was often adopting a Sammy Davis Jr. voice, who would use it often. Unless you are Sammy, or doing an impression there of, it is not ok to call another man 'babe'

There is nothing wrong with calling another man "babe." It should be done sparingly and only amongst guys you know. You would not go into a bar and just call some dude babe else you may be spitting out teeth.

I often refer to my buddies as "babe." But I also call women "babe." There is an old timer here in town that calls everybody "babe" and nobody thinks anything of it.

I say your friend is right. Pay up.

A man calling another man "babe" would be something of an affectation, probably used as a form of jargon -- use of language to create a sense of community distinct from outsiders. So it happens in those circumstances. It could also be a joke.
Think of it this way: Most men know better than to call most other men "babe." Those who have an appropriate relationship can get away with it.
