I just saw the terribly sad story of the bus that killed those boys, the bus driver, and his wife, and it really got me to thinking. The invention of the car has caused the death of more people than just about anything other than the gun. Everyday hundreds die on our roads. I am wondering if anyone out there has any ideas that can really help. Not just putting better seatbelts in, not just "making cars safer", but something that they believe would really help? I am an aspiring student who wants to make a difference in life and i really feel like something like this is the path i want to go down. Any idea?

Don't drive. Walk to school. The human race is meant to live make choices and then die. What happens after death is a different story. But as long as we are here on this planet you'll never change people’s behavior on that large of a level to get them to start paying more attention to their surroundings. No disrespect to the dead. But people just need to stop trying to get no where fast.

Ban cell phone use in cars. Treat them the same as weapons which must be locked seperate from the ammunition ( cell phone in glove box, battery in trunk). Same penalty, as well.

Require people to operate only 250cc motorcycles for at least one year prior to being licensed for a car.
*This would include confiscation of the steering wheel in any car the "motorcycle only" restricted driver was caught operating.

The short answer is to think about driving when you are driving. One can drive without accidents, but it takes experience and dedication, what most people are not ready to commit. There are many facets to this, it’s really can’t be fit into one page answer form. Check the sources if you are serious :)
