What grade range are we talking (elementary, high school etc?)
What are you "hearing"?
And are you talking about the on base school, or the surrounding town (Sumter...)

Get back to me with these details and I have some friends over there I can ask around, off hand I haven't heard anything about these schools - though I heard one bad story about the child day care...

Unless things have radically changed since we were there 6 years ago- yes. The public school system stinks. The private schools are outrageous expensive. The best of them are located in the town district, not the outlying district. The high school looks very similar to a prison facility, there are gangs and drugs everywhere. My kids spent a grand total of three weeks in a local elementary school, before we removed them. During that time, the son was held up at knifepoint on the playground for his lunch ticket, and a week later both kids were food poisoned in the cafeteria. Unless you have the funds for the private schools, look into homeschooling. Given the poor educational opportunities the public school offers, unless you are a real moron, you can't possibly do any worse. If you are being stationed there, you have my sympathies. My best advice would be to live in Columbia and make the 45 minute drive to base- don't even try to live in Sumter.

okay here is the real deal on life at shaw. i'm stationed out there and let me tell you there is nothing good about that place. the school system is horrible and if you are a person who likes to go to the mall there is none out there. you have to go to myrtle beach or drive to charleston in order to do something fun.
