Mike Tyson vs. James "Buster" Douglas. How do you feel Tysons career and perhaps the whole 90's heavyweight division would've changed if when Buster was floored in the 8th, if he stayed on the mat for one more second and Tyson won?

Brad - Why even take the time to give an answer like that? Really i'm not that big of a Tyson fan and he's not in my top 10 heavyweights of all time (unlike most people on yahoo).
Clamshell - Yes it was the one second that changed it because Douglas got up at the count of 9. If he would've stayed down one more second he woudl've been KO'd.

What Douglas did that day was expose Tyson. It wouldn't have mattered if he won or lost.

I don't think Buster would have stayed on the canvass to begin with. Douglas knew that de'd catch Tyson at some point in the fight. Tyson lost his determination to win. Douglas didn't want to get knocked ouy by Tyson before he could even get to him.
If Buster did stay in the canvass, I'm sure another fighter would have caught Tyson before Holyfield. This is because of his slovenly training habits and all the distractions in his camp. They care more about making money than securing Mike Tyson's legacy as a warrior.

If Tyson would have beat Douglas, which on that night nobody would have beat Douglas he fought a perfect fight, things wouldn't be much different today. Tyson would have gone on to a big showdown against Holyfield or Lewis, and he would have lost either fight. And from either loss his career would have gone in a downward spiral.

I have watched the fight several times and Buster took his time in getting up. I think even with a slow count, Buster would have finished the fight.
To answer your question, it would have taken a classic fighter who had a long jab and can move side to side to beat Tyson at that time in his career. Tyson did get lazy and could maul anyone who could stand toe to toe with him. Also Tyson's chin is suspect. Other than Lennox Lewis, I don't think anyone could have beaten Tyson in the early 90's. I was shocked at the way Holyfield beat him with staying close and fighting in spurts and making it a 2 min round by clenching and smothering the punches. It was BRILLIANT and for me totally surprising.

Boxing is measured in seconds. There are any number of "seconds" that could apply to. The Dempsey vs Tunney "long count", the Buster Douglas knock down in his fight with Tyson, the one second it took for any fighter to throw the punch that upset a world champion.

The one second that changed boxing history.....?
I'm not sure that's the way it was ..but it makes a
really good looking headline. One second or another
life time, probably wouldn't matter at all. It would have
been great for boxing...but Mike was destine to go
down another road. It's a shame to think about all he
was, all he could have been and then how he turned out.
He crawls in the ring now and then crawls out. Looking
for no more than his next pay check. What a huge waste.

...as the self-proclaimed biggest tyson fan on this site, it pains me to have to admit that it probably would not have made THAT much of a difference. one could see that, after tyson won the title, he was sloppier than before and easier to hit. he'd lost his tremendous hunger and desire and was "walking" thru fights for a variety of reasons. had buster been counted out, tyson would have certainly scored more victories, but it would have been just a matter of time before someone caught him and exposed him further. i so wish he had hooked up with manny steward back then, as i am convinced he would have been the only trainer who could've gotten inside mike's head and brought him back to glorious victories and secured his rightful place as one of the undisputed top three heavyweights ever! then, he would have easily beaten holyfield, lewis, and everyone else....that's my dream, so don't mess w/it!

I agree with black panther.
Even if Tyson would have won that fight, he would have eventually lost. I remember hearing that before that fight, Tyson got knocked down by his sparring partners Greg Page (which can be seen with they youtube video under source)
Also, it was said before the loss that he wasnt training like he used to.
