i ate a can of pineapples and found a brown worm in the can and i am pretty sure that i ate one. I am totally grossed out and am afraid im going to get a parasite or something. Should i see a doctor and bring him the worm or am i just being paranoid?

From what you've described it sounds like a regular earth worm. You'll probably be fine, earth worms aren't the parasitic flatworms you see on television. If there were any kind of cestode larvae in those pineapples you wouldn't be able to see them without a microscope anyways.

Pineapples also contain Bromelain which has protein-digesting enzymes. Some "alternative medicine" directs fasting on raw pineapples as a way to help rid the body of parasite infestation. (Not that I put much stock in alternative medicine.)

Unless you display symptoms that are common with Intestinal Parasites then you shouldn't fret. But if it's really causing you some concern, you could see a doctor and they could check your stool sample for potential eggs or worm segments. Going to a doctor is the only way to definitively know for sure.

I would suggest that you report what you found to wherever you bought the canned pineapples and go through the motions if need be.

I thought you said you ate the worm? Was there more than one? Pineapple has to go through a process which probably rendered the little fellow hopelessly dead...your stomach acid should take care of the rest. BUT...let the store know where you bought it...that should be reported to the public health department so they can pull the rest of the cans with that lot #. Good luck!

Wow, how frightening it must've been! I would certainly keep the worm as you are suggesting, and see a doctor asap. As someone else mentioned, they may want a stool (bowel movement) sample to see if there is any presence of worms or parasites. And just as another postee said, it's better to be safe than sorry (and be in terrible pain or whatnot).

how did the worm survive the canning process? I used to can tomatoes, pickles, fruit. Boiling water bath for 20 minutes or longer. That was glass jars not pressured sealed, steam packed cans. I'm calling BS

ICK!

You are safe as long as the worm was dead. If you are old enough... I WOULD drink a shot of whiskey straight up, just in case it was alive.
The heat of sealing the can should have killed the worm.

I ATE the contaminated PETERPAN peanut butter and was sick for over two weeks.... I NOW have a problem eating prepackaged food~ yuck yuck tooie, spit gack... ick..

You should definatly go see a doctor. Its better to be safe than sorry. And you would'nt want them to multiply inside of you would you? Plus they could cause alot of problems that you might not even recognize for years, when its to late to do anything about it. I know of I were you I would go crazy worrying about it until the doctor told me I am OK.

watch yourself for symptoms such as severe cramping, difficulty breathing, and diarrhea that doesn't stop with meds.
you are most likely going to be fine. worms aren't unhealthy. they are an excellent source of protein.

I WOULD LOOK THE CAN OVER FOR A PHONE NUMBER AND CALL IT. TELL THE PEOPLE THAT YOU HAD WORMS IN YOUR CAN AND SEE WHAT THEY SAY.
