yes it does make a difference if the girl was a friend or a stranger. if the guy knew the guy some time back and is confused is it her...he will stare at you when he pass or if the girl is a stranger he will stare juz to see who is this girl

if the stranger guy does the head turn, your hot stare then he's just recognizing you for the first time and is supprized that you two havn't met before.
if the aquantence guy does the thing then he knows you two are not good friends but wants to know you better, and by turning his head he is aknowledging your exsistence and probably is angry that you hadn't met before.
if the good friend guy does it then he's just saying "whats up" or if you have wierd sexual tension with him, he wants more or wants to start getting some.
In the end;the guy is trying to aknowledge you exsistince and wants you to know it to.
