Lieing in the ground, bugs crawling over and through your carcass, gnawing away at your rotting innards, fluids seeping into the satin of your sealed coffin, totally buried beneath layers of cold damp earth, squeezing you from every side, and above you, life.

I nearly died in 2004. Really honestly nearly died. I was unconscious for a week, in the hospital for a month, and its taken my head two years to straighten out.

I don't fear death anymore and the thought of it doesn't bother me. Everything that lives must die. Its the way of life. And it makes way for the new.

I looked death in the face and it wasn't so bad. Its odd the way almost dying can bring things into perspective.

Buddhist Monks all over are taught to do a meditation similar to that, it is to foster humility that we are neither high born or low and a realisation of their impending humanity. It is also to help the person realise the preciousness of a human life, how short it is and hence, to treasure those around us whom we care about and to make the best of life by making it joyful for others and oneself.

It is said to help a person to be less attached to one's physical beauty that will eventually end up as all that you mentioned... Life is uncertain, Death is certain. Value all whom you encounter, each moment is precious, each person is precious, each being is precious. Therefore Harm No one, Be Loving and Kind to everyone and be peaceful and pure at heart.
