The book of Daniel tells us, several times, that Daniel found favor in God's eyes, that He was esteemed by God. This was told him the several times that an angel visited him to interpret the visions given to Daniel.
At the outset of the book of Daniel, it describes Daniel being taken captive, with the others, and Daniel was singled out as someone of great intelligence and quick learning. But he refused to defile himself with the king's food, he would not cease to pray to the one true God when threatened, and he generally conducted himself as a man totally dedicated to be God's servant.
Although it doesn't say exactly why Daniel was given these visions, it is my opinion that Daniel's great faith and devotion to God, and his refusal to compromise what he knew to be the ways of God...is why God favored him so and gave him so much insight into things to come.

It is unclear how or when Daniel was called as a prophet of God, but the Lord gave him the ability to interpret dreams and to reveal the future--just as it was given to Joseph, the man sold into slavery by his brothers.

There is no specific "moment" of calling given for Daniel. Rather it appears that he served faithfully in other areas (politics) and was granted the visions that would become his book later in life. Most people do not realize that he was probably in his 70s when he was cast into the Lion's den.

God woke him up in the middle of the night calling his name. Samuel told him to say " here am I Lord" and God accepted him as his prophet.

He wasn't. He's technically not a prophet, since he had dreams instead of visions/prophecies/whichever word you like to use.
