Two questions: 1) is a passport needed? and 2) Does the driver have to be a full G class driver or will a G2 class license be ok?

For now a passport is needed when you fly but not when you drive. I'm not sure if you need to have a G liscence but i think a G2 will do. I drove into buffalo with a G2 but then again that was like a year ago things change. I do know that you can't have a criminal record.

slw182 is correct. According to Passport Canada, you only need a passport to get into USA if you go by AIR for now. Starting sometime after January 2008, you will also need a passport to get into USA by land methods too.

My understanding is that as long as you have a license that allows you to drive the vehicle in Canada, it is honored in the States too (depending on the state laws). Years ago, I drove in the US using a learner's permit, but (as in Canada) I had to have an adult in the passenger seat with me.

The only issue you may have with a G2 license would be trying to rent a car. Once I had a full license, I was eligible to drive my own car, but car rental agencies would not rent to anyone under 21 years of age.

As for Buffalo (in this case New York state), they honor Canadian driver's licenses, based on what I see on their website (attached below).
