Lasagna, also lasagne, (pronounced /lə'zan.jə/), is both a form of pasta in sheets (often rippled in North America and other countries, though seldom so in Italy) and also a dish, sometimes named Lasagne al forno (meaning "Lasagne in the oven") made with alternate layers of pasta, cheese, and sometimes ragù (a meat sauce). While it is traditionally believed to have originated in Italy, evidence has come to light suggesting that a very similar meal known as "loseyns" (pronounced 'lasan') was eaten in the court of King Richard II of England in the 14th Century. The recipe was also featured in the first cookbook ever written in England. However, the claim is far from universally accepted (see the much earlier Roman use of "lasanum" below). The Italian Embassy in London particularly speaks out against such theories.[1] It has also been claimed that the Scandinavian "Langkake", popular from the Viking ages, is a relative of, or even precursor to lasagne but there is as of yet no evidence that the true lasagne developed from this multilayered dish consisting of flatbread, meat sauce and cheese.

The word "lasagna" is derived from the Greek word "lasanon" meaning chamber pot. The word was later borrowed by the Romans as "lasanum" to mean cooking pot. The Italians then used the word to refer to the dish in which what is now known as lasagna is made. The word lasagna or lasagne (plural) now simply applies to the food itself. The British (and Italians) generally use the plural "lasagne" to mean both the dish and the pasta while the Americans commonly use the singular "lasagna".

Many recipes call for several kinds of cheese, most often ricotta and mozzarella. The classic Lasagne alla Bolognese uses only Parmigiano Reggiano. Many recipes also add bechamel sauce (besciamelli)

The definition is:

Pasta in the form of wide strips
-A baked Italian dish consisting of this layered or cooked with vegetables, meat, cheese and tomatoe sauce.

It is, in my opinion one of the best italian foods around and it is so versatile ot your own tastes. The one considered traditional would be cooked lasagna noodles then:

take a 2x9x13 inch baking pan and place some tomatoe sauce (with or without meat cooked in it) to cover the bottom
add a layer of noodles slightly overlapping
spread on more sauce and then sprinkle with cheese or even add ricotta and some shredded like, mozzarella, provolone, cheddar
keep repeating the process until you have three or four layers and then finish it with top layer of noodles having sauce then cheese then sauce and more cheese. Bake it in a 350 F oven for 30 mins.

The fun thing is that you can use almost any type of sauce you would place on pasta. you can use any type of cheese or combination and you can make it with meat or without!

Try some! It is very good! I hope this is of some help!

You get a large baking pan and put meat sauce in the bottem. Over that you put a layer of lasagna noodles. You put ricotta cheese over that with some more of the meat sauce and then mozzarella cheese over that. Repeat this two more times and then put sauce on the top and sprinkle some parmesan cheese. Bake in oven on 325 degrees for an hour or more until it is hot and bubbly.

Layered pasta. Italian and here is a good recipe

Lasagna
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds lean ground beef
2 cans (12.5 ounces each) tomatoes
1 can (15 ounces)
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
16 ounces lasagna
2 cups ricotta cheese
16 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Chop onions and garlic. Heat oil in skillet; add onions, garlic, and ground beef. Mix together, breaking up beef, and cook until beef is lightly browned. Pour off excess fat. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until some of the liquid has evaporated and mixture is thickened to sauce consistency.
Meanwhile, cook lasagna in boiling salted water, following package directions. Cook until tender; drain thoroughly and rinse with cold water until cool enough to handle.

In a large baking pan (13x9x2-inch) spread 1/3 of the sauce in the bottom. Cover with a layer of lasagna, using about 1/2 of the noodles. Spread with half of the ricotta cheese, then top that with about 1/3 of the mozzarella slices; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Repeat with the next layer then top with remaining 1/3 of sauce.

Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes, or until hot and bubbly. Top with remaining cheese about halfway through baking. Cut in squares to serve.

It is a fabulous layered casserole.

Boil a package of lasagne noodles then drain and separate the noodles.

Mix a large jar of spaghetti sauce with 2 pounds ground beef.

Mix together 1 pound ricotta cheese, 1 pound large curd cottage cheese, 2t dried basil, 2 cups shredded mozzerella, and 1 cup grated parmesean cheese.

Put a light layer of sauce in the bottom of a 10x15 baking dish.
Make a layer of noodles, a layer of cheese, layer of meat sauce, then repeat: NOodles, cheese, sauce...noodles cheese sauce, then noodles and pour the rest of the sauce over the top. Sprinkle with parmesean cheese and bake at 350 for about 1 hour, until hot and bubbly all the way through.

This serves about 8-12 people, depending on their level of starvation.
