Alrighty ... this is sort of a fun question. A designer dog is considered something that is desired by humans. But a designer dog is a mix between one ... two ... three breeds. I call this sort of dog a mutt. What has our society come to when a dog is breed from a purebreed unto something else? Why is there marketing on this sort of dog? Why is it called a designer dog?

First and foremost, I did spell check and it did not pick up “purebred”. Secondly, I did not proofread thoroughly - bred was the correct work I was looking for. Thirdly, I did not question why society likes designer dogs over purebreds - just posed an interesting question.

Sort of like why someone needs to discredit someone else on yahoo answers when they pose a question that one should ponder and when a respondent does not really even answer the question correctly. To an intelligent person a question posed would allow a respondent to question his or her own beliefs. It is called “thinking out side of the box” and what effects this can cause when breeding multiple breeds.

P.S. – I have been on yahoo answers for a while and really get irritated when you get people that respond that are simply just not courteous in their responses.

i like this question as sometimes it is very annoying to see questions..like ' have u heard of the breed puggle where can i get one? Can i get CKC or AKC papers should i breed my (mutt)?' before i started on here i didn't really realize how big the designer mutts are..it amazes me and sadness me that ppl will pay out the wazoo for a mutt that i got for free or around 100 dollars at the shelter. i love mutts by the way. i would not however pay a breeder of mutts to get one.
to mix 2or3 breeds from probably poor standard of their pure-blood... its just making mutts of poor health..just like any BACK YARD BREEDER because if u are breeding MUTTS ur not breeding for any reason other then to make money... sure my grandmother and a german Shepherd/collie mix one of my best friends on the farm he was a good dog...but i wouldn;t go to someone who breeds their dogs to get that mix..thats just nuts when there are lots of dogs dying every day..and i'm sure there is a mutt of that cross set up to die tomorrow

it just nuts the ppl who pay 400+ on mutts are not at all educated in any way on any dog. or really don't care i believe we live in a world of ppl who care not of what they do just as long as they get what they want. or make a few bucks doing really stupid things....like breeding more unwanted dogs.....

I am going to define a purebred for anyone who wants to know the difference.

A purebred is a animal (in our case dogs) that breed the same characteristics in every breeding. Every breed has a "standard" that states both how the dog should look and how it should act. If I grab any two purebred dogs of the same breed and breed them together, I get dogs that look like the parents. Even if the breed was originally bred from other dogs (for example dobermans), the current breed has a standard and the dogs breed true to that standard.

The positive to having breeds is that you know what to expect in size, shape, color (often) and temperment. All dog breeds have been bred with both a look and personality (or instincts) in mind. If you have a herding breed, it will herd...anything.

These "designer" breeds are not breeds in that they do NOT breed true. They can be any combination of traits and any size that the parents carry (any where from smaller than the smallest parent to larger than the larger parent depending on what combination of genes they carry). There is no traits that are going to come through every breeding. There is no breed standard. If the people breeding these things decide that a labradoodle (for example) had to have the non-shedding of the poodle and the personality of the lab and certain physical characteristics (a breed standard) and only bred the offspring that showed those traits (stablizing it as a breed), that would be a different story. They aren't. They make claims about what the cross is supposed to be and people spend way too much money to get a labradoodle that sheds like a lab and has a poodle personality.

As for why they came up with "designer" dog and all the cutsie names ( I think they sound horrible), it's a marketing tool. They are trying to claim that they can "design" a dog to fit a need that isn't being furfilled, when probably 50-75 % of the dogs fail to fit the "need" they are supposed to be bred for.

I ask this question all the time, "why would someone pay more for a mutt, than they would for a pedigreed, quality dog of a breed?" If you have a need for a mixed breed, go to the shelter and find one that fits your needs. Get an adult. You know just what he or she is like both physically and mentally. If you want to raise a puppy that has X qualities, research breeds and find a purebred that fits those qualities.

The label designer dog was thought up to create the illusion that these mutts were somehow superior to the plain old mutts in the pounds and shelters. The name designer dog also gives justification to those who spent hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars on a mutt. It makes them feel better because they have bought something "special". It is the same reason people will pay so money much for a pair of jeans or shirt, THE LABEL.

As for pure bred dogs being mutts the ONLY thing I will say to that is much research, time and effort went into the development of the current breeds we have today. The breeds in existence today were created for more than just making money. What people do when trying to create a breed of dog is a far cry from what the crooks do to make a buck peddling their inferior dogs as special. Not only that but these people that claim they are creating a "new breed" are doing nothing to make it a "real breed of dog" They create these animals for the sole purpose of making money.

Give me a break you have a 50/50 chance at best of getting a dog that will not shed from poodle crosses and the same odds if not less, that they will be healthier, because most of the crosses are bred from inferior animals to begin with. Yes the breeds above started out as a cross but much research, time and effort went into the development they did not just start breeding the dogs and offering them out to the public for an exorbant amount of money. If those that claim they are trying to create new breeds want to do it right they should put in the work by making sure the dogs they use are heathy and create a standard to breed from. Just throwing two different pure breeds together does NOT make a new breed

The call them "designer dogs" because mutt does not sound as good, so it is basically just they way that they are marketed. I think that we have plenty of purebreds available from reputable breeders, and plenty of mixes at the shelters. In my opinion, the only people that breed them are just in it for the money and they are risking the lives and health of the dogs just to profit from them.

you hit the nail on the head. they were called mutts not too many years ago and were sold in papers for less than $25.00 or given away. i would not pay $799.00 for a labradoodlepootzuspaniel. i'll go to the humane society/animal shelter and get a designer dog for $100.00 including first shots and spay/neuter. i guess they came up with the designer dog tag because they thought the term "mutt" was offensive?

If you think about it, most purebreeds are mutts. They are bred down from other breeds over the years to produce the current standards. A breed is created when enough of the dog exists and it is proven that there is interest in the breed. There are a few dogs that have gone unchanged over the years, but when it comes down to it, they are ALL mixed.

I don't know why you say "what has our society come to when a dog is breed from a purebreed unto something else?" First of all, you need to get spellcheck and secondly, why does it matter if society likes mixed dogs over purebreds? I myself love mutts just as much as purebreds and don't value one over the other. To me, a purebred is nothing but a mutt with a fancy name and a slip of paper saying its worth more than your average shelter dog.

i really don't know... but i love my purebreeds...don't get me wrong... i like muts too but when ppl breed dogs and muts.. there are so many things that can go wrong with bad health problems... and when they start turning these dogs into muts, they... most the time end up on the street! with your purebreeds you know the size, temperment, color, health problems, parents, and its easier to find out things about them

wow do i agree with you !! takes years and years to breed out problems and to "perfect" a breed only to cross a with a slew of other issues...?? only people who know nothing about genetics are doing this... its appalling. anything for a buck !! and the dogs suffer.

CROOKS can "call" the MUTT/MONGRELS anything they want but calling a chicken a DUCK won't make it swim!

The vast majority of people are not just ignorant (ignorance is CURABLE!) but also stupid & lazy & GULLIBLE! They'll fall for ANY smooth talking crook, swallow EVERY *LIE* because they will NOT get off their butts & RESEARCH! They follow every fad that's current & then dump it when REALITY sets in.

LIES are more palatable than TRUTH!

A designer dog is usually just half and half. Not a random Heinz 57 kind of dog with lots of different unknown breeds.

And it's usually trying to add something to the breed.

For example, all the poodle mixes-- why??? To reduce shedding. There is a reason behind cockapoos and labradoodles. Those cockers and labs shed!

Now why someone would want to breed a Morkie, I have no idea. They are like grayed out yorkies (crossed with maltese). In my opinion, they don't add much color and they aren't any better looking. So in that case.... I think it's the sheer love of variety.

And a lot of the "designer" dogs are small dogs. It's just getting more variety into smaller dogs.

****
Besides, some "official" AKC recognized breeds were developed by mixing breeds together like designer dogs do.

Example, bull mastiff was 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog. Do you have a problem with that AKC breed?

What about the Doberman Pinscher? Do you have a problem with this "mutt" that was created by ONE MAN?

"The Doberman Pinscher was developed by a skilled dog breeder by the name of Herr Louis Dobermann in the late 1800's (circa 1890) in the town of Apolda Germany."

Dobermans are a mix of Rottweilers, German Pinscher, Great Dane and German Shorthaired Pointer.

What about this example?

Black and Tan Coonhound... AKC breed.. which was bred from American and English Foxhounds...

****

So, basically, you don't like mixed breeds until they are recognized by the AKC?
