Whenever I sleep in the afternoon and then go take something out of the fridge, my mom has always told me not to because I can catch a cold.
How does doing this have a higher percentage of catching a cold, then without sleeping?

These old tales are silly, but kind of neat in a way. There's obviously no reason that napping in the afternoon and opening the fridge could increase susceptibility to a cold. But these sort of tales are family folklore that gets passed down to each generation, and its probably something your grandmother told you mom when she was a kid - either to keep her from eating snacks in the afternoon, or to discourage naps. You might ask you mom where she came up with that idea. My grandmother and my mom had all sorts of sayings like this and now that I am an adult, I find myself saying them even though I know they don't make any sense.

I think she's trying to politely stop you from eating too many snacks in the afternoon.
