I have had my parakeets for barely more than a day, it is our 2nd night together. I bought 2 (Charm+Leaf). I can see that they are getting to be more comfortable around me than they were on the first day. I followed the instructions of earlier advisors, and we are now at a stage where both of them will allow me to gently stroke their front (below their beaks), tails, and feet. However, they don't like it if i touch them with a finger, i'm only allowed to stroke them. If they feel uncomfortable, they won't fly or jump around like the previous day, but just move to a side, and I'll give them their space for a while. What should i do next??? Also, I put a pink cloth over their cage at night, and i don't ever interact with them after the cloth is on, the most i will do is peak at them. Is that good? Does that show them that they have total privacy/its time to rest once the pink cloth is on? any suggestion is appreciated. thanks!

I go to college and work, so I can't be with the parakeet/budgie all the time, and that's why i got it a friend. I do spend a lot of time with them though. I don't mind not ever being their favorite, but I do hope that they will want to interact with me and let me play with them.

It sounds like you are doing great with them, especially if they will let you pet them already. Just keep it up so that they can gain your trust.

If they let you touch them by their feet, push very gently in a upward motion and say "step up". That is how I got my parakeet to step up. Once you can do this just let your birds sit on your finger for a while. If their wings are clipped you can thing eventually bring then outside of the cage.

As for the cover I know it is very tempting to peak, but you really should not peak. I did the same thing when i got my parakeet, but it is their private time and you do need to respect that. The cloth is good. It shows your birds that it is now time to sleep. The complete darkness also helps them sleep better.

This is a great book that will tell you anything you want to know about how to train your parakeet, your parakeet's health, and much more. You can get it for $12.99 at Borders or cheaper at www.amazon.com

Are their wings clipped? I bet they are if they're from a pet store. Once they're comfortable in their cage, try this..
Parakeet proof your room (cover mirrors, block places like under the bed if possible..make sure you can get behind the dresser if need be...in case one needs to be rescued) and open the door of the cage and keep it open with a twist-tie....then go sit down in the room and be patient. Try not to watch. One will eventually come out and work its way up the cage to the top. You can also put the cage on the floor to do this...while you sit on the floor several feet away....maybe some bits of carrots or green lettuce nearby..
They may freak and try to fly around...they may come out...get on top of the cage, and then go back in. But once they're comfy with things, they'll try to interact with you. Be warned though...you will never be their favorite. They will bond together. It's best to only have one (usually male) budgie if you want a closeness.

when I was reading through some of the answers I noticed someone said to feed your birds lettuce. This is incorrect, feedind any bird lettuce usually results in it having runny poop and a sore tummy. I know I've read some books that say lettuce is ok to feed to birds however I think other wise from my experience of owning budgies, cockateils and princess parots for five years all my birds were sick after lettuce. I got worried so I consolted a couple pet shops, and was told not to feed it to them.

patience. it takes a while to establish their trust. if your are going to try to finger train them, be sure their wings are clipped. just continue to do what you are doing. after a while, try putting your finger under their chests by their feet they should start to climb up on your finger. eventually you can get them to play on a execise area outside the cage. we had one that had perches, ladders, and a little merry go round. they will eventually learn that when the little pink blanket goes on,it is bedtime. it don't hurt to peek in at them. we did this when we had our keet. from about 1974 to 1986 either my mom or my husband and i have had keets. we had four one time. due to allergies of dust mites(which they have in feathers) we had to give away our 4 keets,3 cockatiels and 2 zebra finches

Wolfdogs are not any more possibility-free for a prevalent time proprietor, any better than first time proprietors are for wolfdogs. they're no longer continually merely canine that seem as if wolves, they sometimes opt for diverse diets, will be very shy, are puzzling to socialize, are mad get away artists, are frequently very very unfavourable and incapable of living interior, there are not any rabies vaccines approved for them, they're unlawful in a great number of aspects. they're usually very shy and skittish (a subordinate wolf's organic reaction to danger is to run), and some disreputable people go aggressive canine with wolves. one in each of you need to finally end up getting damage. canine were bred for millenia to be pets, that is why they're diverse from wolves- they're wolves with out the traits that make wolves incorrect to be kept via all of us yet specialists. If wolves made obviously solid pets, canine does no longer be so diverse from them. i'd say bypass to petfinder, a husky, german shepherd or blended-breed would have the look and the ability blended with a extra proper temperament and habit. Labs and staffies also are very solid, dalmations and such are extremely tall. search for a canine, no longer a breed. do no longer purchase an incorrect canine because this is the right breed or bypass up a fantastic canine because this is the incorrect one. mutually, do do a great number of study on the breed of your canine to provide you a imprecise theory of what it will be like. The personality and power element of the canine is the biggest element, the seems come 2d. in case you may't stay with a canine it gained't count number how captivating that is. solid success!

Hi there, I know it's too late, but it's probably better that you got only one parakeet, if you want it to be YOUR companion. They will mostly bond with each other. Anyway, here is a WONDERFUL site that will probably help you: http://www.birdtricks.com/training_parrots.htm. Hope this helps. =) Thanks for asking!
