if someone ran 100 meters in 20 seconds,then ran another 100 meters in 25 seconds,what would the runner's average speed be over the whole 200 meters?

200 meters in 45 seconds = 4.44 m/s

Average speed over 1st 100 >> 100 m/20 s = 5 m/s
Average speed over 2nd 100 >> 100 m/ 25 s = 4 m/s


Note that you cannot average the individual speeds because you'd get 4.5 m/s, which is not correct.

ya. they probably shouldn't say "over the whole 200 meters?"

add em all together & divide by two
200 mts in 45 seconds
average.........100 mts in 22.5 seconds
