I know the basic training is 13 weeks...which I could do. But you also have to do your individual training right after that- could I do that the next summer?

I have parental permission.

Sigh. Yes, I plan on finishing school and going on to college and getting degrees.

I thought it was clear. Apparently it is not. I am a junior this year. I finish junior year, do my training over the summer. Do senior year. Next summer (thats '08) I finish my training. Then I go to college while I'm a Marine. Ta duh.

While in school you can join JROTC which will give you some training and if you decide to join the military after school (you must have a diploma or GED to join it is required) you can go through Basic Training and a-school you will most likely have a higher rank. you can't join active duty until graduated. but you can join the Dep program goto www.marines.com or www.usnavy.com for more info There is NO guarantees unless it is written on your signed contract. If and when you do join be sure to read everything in your contract once you sign it, it is extremely hard if not impossible to change. also just as extra help learn the PT requirements and be able to do them before shipping out. Good luck and God speed!
have a fine Navy day!

OK...you can enlist under delayed entry with parental approval.

However, you cannot actually go to basic training until you are 18 years of age.

Talk to your recruiter about local training programs for youth. I know they do exist. BUT, they offer no advantage for "time served". It is voluntary on your part, and only better prepares you for basic.

Somebody mentioned being careful with the recruiters, that they lie to you. This is indeed true. I was in the Navy. While my recruiters knew better than to lie to me (as I have a head on my shoulders), some kids are very very gullible, and will believe things that are not true. So yes, unless your contract specifically states something will happen, as in you will go to such and such school, chances are, no matter what your recruiters told you, you won't be going to the school (or whatever).

Now, I'm not sure what your other musings were on...college and stuff. You won't be doing much college while in the service. The opportunity exists, but you won't have time. You will pretty much have to wait until you are out for that.

Unless you were talking about the ROTC or academy programs. That is a different ball game.

You can join the Delayed Entry Program while age 17 and a junior. Your enlistment will not be complete until you turn 18 and graduate. I have never heard of a summer program for Marine boot camp... That's not quite their style.. For specific answers about going to college as a Marine and what that looks like, you need to talk to a Marine recruiter. My son's recruiter was awesome.. and never misrepresented anything.

Oh... and in the Marine Corps, it's "Boot Camp"... not "basic training"

talk with a recruiter, I believe you can enlist under the delayed entry program, at 17 but go to Boot,, is a negative,
there is a program called young marines you join to get some training but not actual training.

http://www.youngmarines.com/

and use this site for more lingo/ranks etc etc to study for boot.

if it is impossible to this summer,
here is another tip go to college this summer to some credits
if you have some college credits you can a have stripe after graduation form boot.

You can join while you are a junior and do a delayed entry program which I think the max is still 1 year but you will not be allowed to start until the end of your senoir year.

What do you think the Marines are, school ROTC? You sign a contract and you go to training and if you're lucky, you'll finish school when you return from the middle east.

you need high school diploma first in order to join at 17, thats why most ppl go in the military at 18. Anyways join the NAVY SEALS its tight and hella harder than marines :)

My nephew joined at age 17. Now he says he's sorry. He's headed to Iraq in May and 10 of his friends have been killed in Iraq. Now he's trying to get out of going. He's been in 11 months now. He hates the Marines. They lied to him so be careful. They will lie to you too just to get you in.

Finish school and don't join the Marines or you will regret it.
